I am building an engine from scratch and i cant find a sump that will fit over my integral balance shaft/ oil pump. there is a pipe that curls round from what looks like the dip stick hole, what does this do? do i need it? because if i take this off my sump fits perfectly
also i hav no oil squirters  i tried to fit sum off an old 2.5 tdi but wont fit, what engines have the same ones as the 2.0 PD?
does anyone have a water hose diagram of an ALH so i know what im doing?
i heard that the water pumps go on these and when they do they mess everything up, can you get after market ones that are more reliable?
-
I have no idea what you are having issues with on the oil pump and balance shaft... aren't you using the oem one?
as far as the alh having issues with the water pumps thats true but usually only after 100k. you could always cut it out and use an electric pump if you wished...
for your oil squirters use 2.0l pd ones. they will work fine.
PS what are you trying to do? Have you seen my build thread? Chears kyle

The problem, at least in the UK, was the water pumps had plastic impellors, this was/is a problem on all the 4 cylinder models.
GSF sell a waterpump with the metal impellor, its cheaper, and i've used at least 2 now with no problems, they are cheaper aswell
-
i will purchase a pump from GSF then, thanx.
the oil pump/balance shaft is just one big thing, there is a bendy metal pipe about 6 inches long that the dip stick goes down, i cant make it fit with the only sump that is available to me. can i just live without it or will it not get the right dip stick reading?
was just wondering if oil squirters off anything else wud fit to save me buying them

aren't you using a PD block? don't they have oil squirters?
-
yes they do, but all i hav is a bare block with nothin on it

ive come up with an idea. my mate works at a MR2 tuning company he tells me that people convert from hydraulic tappits to solid lifters for power gain because the hydraulic tappits are spungey and valuable valve lift is lost especialy at high revs.
how hard would it be to convert an ALH head to solid lifter?
how do i get it just right so it doesnt tap like ***?
ive got a spare 1.6 solid lifter head to use for spares should i use the springs and buckets from this?
is there any sutch solid lifter valves that will fit straight in to a ALH?
also a head specialist tells me that porting a turbo engine wont make any differance to power, getting rid of the 90degree bend from inlet to head might though, can anyone back this up?
-
For your head questions what you need is a cam, and a good porting. Also go for heavier valve springs if you plan on running things up at higher rpms. As far as hydro no hydro? I dont know about noise but I decided to stick with the hydros for now... I am not asking to have that much more lift where I can't run with them. BUT you can get parts from Rosten perfromance. Geir will take care of you, tell him I sent you. AND tell your head guy that 10-15hp has been seen with head porting for the tdi engine! This is on more modified cars but it is still worth it. Mainly to reduce egts and smoke though.
On the intake. I have no proof but I agree that reducing that angle to say 50 degrees from 90 would make for some drastic flow reductions!
-
well i was going to run an AAZ cam, i hear they giv you a bit more lift.
i didnt think mechanical lifters wer that noisey, maybe i was wrong.
i want sum serious power out of this engine, i dont mind thinking outside the box.
getting barings that can take 500bhp and ARP everything, because i only started with a block every single nut and bolt has been purchaced seperatly, only the highest grade steel will do. now im not sure what to do about a turbo/supercharger. need sum ideas, how can i get 350bhp? will a GT20 do or should i go bigger?
does anyone know how much power 2.0 ASV rods can take before they bend?
-
i have had a few gas engines with mechanical lifters (shimes and buckets)
and i like them for high rpm and if the oil gets a bit to hot ,no ratels,
But for a diesel 6000 rpm max good oil +pump+oil cooler , I dont think there is any need for mechanical lifters
as for turbo gt 22 for a min , or gt 28 , you going to run NOS and LPG ?
what lb ft can a pd crank take ? you may have to brace the mains
-
i was going to run methanol and nos, i thort the bottom end can take alot as its is reinforced. will i need a main gurdle? thort ppl tune PDs to about 300 odd
where can i get a turbo like that?
-
LT 35 has a gt 22 there is more but cant think of hand , but will have a look , the pd bottom end is problay strong E nuff
you on night shift rich :( you going to sell me your old gt20 for £40
-
ye on the day and night shifts :( sumones got to bring home the bacon
my GT20 is on the 1Z that ive built, gona put it in the corrado shortly,
gets confusing, got so many projects, this is going in my 4x4 caddy 8)
so you recon a GT22 is all i will need to get that sort of power?
im getting excited now, its starting to look like an engine and has only cost me £400 so far. will post sum pics later
-
im after sum high performance thrust and big end bearings
anyone got any ideas where to look?
thort id found sum but they are not for PD
-
ive come along way in the last few weeks
ive just orderd sum splutter bearings for the big ends and ive got new bearings and seals alround, upgrades where available, ive spent every waking minit on this, and spared no expence
heres sum pics so far

i need a little help getting the coolant system sorted as i have no idea what pipes shud go where as ive never actually seen an ALH and i cant find any pics or diagrams, can anyone help?
-
The coolant hose routing I can draw it on a paper, but dont know how to explain here, ask each plug and I can answer.
I'm surprised that the 1.9L head fit on a 2.0L bloc.
Seems to be a 2.0L 8V, possible?
-
the late 1.9tdi (ALH ect) fits perfectly, they are pretty much the same block.
after working on a 1Z the PD stuff seems very cheap and crappy even though its extreamly expensive, the block is solid as *** but everything else seems like it was made on a buget, the rods are now in fastened down with brand new after market sputter bearings but they still wobble  the pistons are too small for the bore, aparently these engines can expect to burn a litre of oil every 1000 miles, so by ur 20k service you could have a negative 15 litres of oil if you forgot to fill up
i should of stuck with the 1Z and spent the extra money on a main gurdle
i think ive got the coolant system sorted now, ill post sum pics with the hoses and see what you think, thanx tintin
anyone know where the CCV is on this? will 35-40 psi cause me trouble? was gona machine the pistons to lower the compression but i think im gona wait till it blows its first head gasket b4 i bother
BTW im gona hav a spare AAZ that is quite fast, anyone intreasted or know what they are worth?
