Title: Started my port and polish today!! lots of pics!
Post by: 53 willys on August 22, 2008, 09:48:55 pm
So I started to P&P my 1.6td head today
I gasket matched the intake and exhaust and also the exhaust manifold.
I bought a $15 package of 80grit and 120 grit tapered and straight sanding barrels from harbor freight man they worked really good!!!
I know lots of guys say not to do the exhust but when I looked at the ports they are not very flow freindly at ALL...most the restriction is around the valve seat..I am half way done now..I planned to do a VERY light P&P but once I was in there I could not help but remove all the sharp edges and casting seams...I got some pics I will post in the morning. 8)

I did the same thing to my 1.9AAZ head while I was rebuilding the head. I also matched the exhaust manifold to the gasket and the intake manifold.

here they are...I did not remove the valve guides..I just could not see it making that much difference when the guide sticks so far out of the head casting...but you can see the ridge that is big and sharp on the valve side....I did not remove to much in the ports..mostly just cleaned and smoothed all the edges...this is pics with only half the work done..I wanted to try and get a before/side by side shot for reference.

I like this pic you can see the ridge has been taken down and you can tell there is much more room....left intake port=stock....right intake port has been ported an polished.

sorry for the blurry pics I tried many different shots..I'm no photographer!

this is my shaving pile after doing half the head...lol

it's easier to tell what and how much better the head is when you can run your finger across the smoothed ports vs stock..but like I said it was hard for me to capture that with the camera..
it also hard to tell but everything was gasket matched too.
