I am currently Swaping in a 1.9 IDI into my 96 MK3. I completly Nuked the 1.8 Gas Job in it...Here is my Question, I was told by a shop to put a pipe thru my catalytic converter (straight thru) leave my resinator on the back and put a "fart can" on the Back creating more or less a straight exhaust on it...Is that a good Idea to do? I do plan on putting a forced air intake on the front...and putting a performance chip. Does Anyone know if I would get more power out of it?
-
Need to remove the cat for sure. the muffler is your choice. Depends on if you want to hear it or not.
-
I'd be interested to see where you put the chip on a 1.9 IDI.
-
your air needs to be forced? it wont go in willing?
where you find the chip?

correct me if I'm wrong, but aren't all 1.9's Forced air due to the turbo?
definately as stright as possible for exhaust, better flow = more power. don't worry abour noise as the turbo muffles most of it.
also, no need for chipping, there is no computer. try using the search bar for tips on how to improve idi diesels. try here for starters http://www.vwdiesel.net/phpBB/viewtopic.php?t=579&highlight=make+++faster
best of luck and welcome to the wonderfull world of diesel[/list]

Yeah, pay no attention to these sarcastic whippersnappers... you're in diesel land now and your gasser background will just need a bit of alignment as you learn, is all !
"CAIs" and "FAIs" are of no use on a turbo diesel (actually, in my opinion, they're of no use on a gasser either  ) since you are already getting orders of magnitude more boost out of the turbo than you ever will from an intake. Your gasser probably has a stock cold air intake anyways... save your cash.
Dirtrag2 has posted a really good link to get you started.. like a gasser your best mods are anything that can make it breath easier (removing exhaust restrictions is a great first step) and any way to add more fuel at the right time.... ie pump modifications. Your pump is completely mechanical but can be modified.... poke around this forum and you'll find lots of thoughts on how.

sure its not a tdi?

I have a 1.9 IDI pump that has a start of injection sensor and also the TDI style advance control so "chipping" an IDI might not be too crazy. Mind you it is from Europe (I think). I'm only pretty sure it is from a 1.9 AAZ, I know we ran the pump number at work but there was about 5 pumps we were checking so I might be mixed up.

The Air intake i'm putting on is going to sit down on the bottom of my rad and is an 2 foot wide by 8 inch high box with a filter on the front (like a CAI) and the piping goes directly to the turbo...so the faster I go the more air it pushes in and the faster i can go...And I have the link at home for the performance chip. And Yes it is a IDI, I should know more tomorrow morning the donor car is in transport and should be arriving in the morning.... I'll let you guys know how I make out with it...

i really want to hear more about this chip! please fill us in on the info!

Do your injectors look like this?

Or like this? If they look like the first pic, you have no ECU, no place to put a chip, nothing that uses a chip.
If it looks like #2 then you have a TDI which does use a chip

I don;t know, the IDI is in transit right now and should be at my place in the mornign when i'm off work, so ti'll then i don't know, I only saw the motor once in the scrap yard and it was running and said 1.9 turbo diesel on the valve cover.

it is a IDI and i talk to another shop and they coreected me also...no chips for them...and I'm almost complete the swap...we worked 4 days straigh getting the gas out and the diesel out, and prepping my car for the new motor...wiring, fuel tank and lines, all thats left is the get the exhaust together and put in the motor in and hook everything back up...i hope it works...
