Title: WTB-AAZ turbo, intake/exhaust manifolds, alt. mounting etc!
Post by: Joelwesty on August 07, 2008, 08:21:00 am
PM or email if you have any of these. The alternator mount can be from an AAZ or AHU with AC and I need the tensioner wheel that comes with it. I'm only interested in the AAZ turbo if it is good, the kind that mounts with 3 bolts. The manifolds need to be from an AAZ also, just to be clear.  I'd also take both of the turbo oil lines if they're in good shape. Thanks a lot for any help north of the border. Joel

Many AAZ's had k-14's which had 4 bolt manifolds, FYI.

The 3 bolt one is the K03. Not sure why anyone would want it... it's dangerously small IMO

The reason I'm looking for the three bolt manifold is that I'm told that is the best fit for my application.  I'm under the impression that the three bolt locates the turbo higher up towards the intake than the four bolt.  I know the manifold/turbo setup on say, Jimfoo's AAZ, flat out won't work for what I'm doing.

Mounting this motor in a Vanagon with the factory hardware tilts the motor over at 50 degrees and really limits clearances between the turbo and the motor mounts.  Plus there's turbo drain issues, etc etc.  But, if I'm wrong and there's an AAZ four bolt exhaust manifold that locates the turbo (only the turbo with the lever actuated waste gate will fit) in the same exact location as the as the three bolt, then I'd be interested in it.  Obviously my experience with this stuff is limited, so thanks for the interest, concern, information and patience.  Joel

These show where a K-14 sits. Does the K03 sit higher?

K03 (pretty sure)

I was just trying to upload photos of my old engine.   Burn your money just beat me to it.  Looks like the KO3 setup I used to have.  That rod actuated wastegate looks like the difference.  Both setups have the turbo high I see now, but that rod just clears the vanagon engine mount.  See here:(http://images.thesamba.com/vw/gallery/pix/467169.jpg)
Here's the complete setup

Is the KO3 the only turbo for the AAZ that is this compact? That might be why I'm being told that's the one I need.  There must be a similar Garret?  Thanks, Joel

Yes, the T2. It is also very small. I forget what it looks like though

k-14 doesn't have that rod though, so I bet it would fit as well.
