Well, so far my newly made breather/oil separator seems to be working well. It's just about dry where the vent tube connects. I made it out of an Al fire extinguisher. I flattened the base out and welded in two tubes, one for the valve cover, another for the crank case. I filled it with SS mesh from an old oil bath air filter, then welded the top of the fire extinguisher back on, with a curved aluminum tube coming out of that. Unfortunately it is REALLY ugly since I kept having feed problems with my spool gun and got tired of trying to sand off all that "extra" aluminum, which was a bit, from trying to fill numerous pin holes and burn through holes. Maybe I'll post a pic later if you won't laugh at the welds.

I rolled it up and used 2 stacks inside the extinguisher to keep the oil at bay.

Sorry I know I said I wouldn't laugh but I cant do any better so...

Makes me feel good that I'm not the only one.

You should try to weld alum with a reg mig.. At least you have a spool gun.

Almost forgot.

Did you put a drain on it? I'm sure you did. Does it just drain to the pan or what?

It will drain into either the valve cover or the crankcase. I imagine that the oil builds up to a level where any blowby can't stop it from draining back faster than it enters, and with the larger diameter and amount of screen, the gasses don't have the velocity to lift it to the top, so it doesn't make it into the intake. My smoke level has been GREATLY decreased. I think the small tube from the IC drain which is barely visible hooking into the crank vent hose helps too by not allowing a lot of oil to build up in the IC. I did pit a restrictor in the line to limit the air that comes through from the IC.

have you used pure Argon or a mix?

should be very efficient if you say the smoke level went down :D

he wouldn't have any built up beads cause the Al would be wadded before it got to the gun.   :wink:  :lol:

advantage also is any intercooler will be more efficient if the oil doesn't coat the inside.  On TDI's, wont have as much soot build up cloging the intake from the EGR.
