I just scored on a running 86 1.6TD with 5spd and want to drop it into my 82 2dr Rabbit that has a 1.6 N/A with 4spd. So I am looking for links on here for doing just that? I am mostly concerned about the tranny part.
Thanks in advance

If it's 90mm drive flanges, then you only need to worry about putting 5 speed shifter bits into your car.
You'll need to put the A1's passenger side engine mount/pump bracket onto the 86 engine. Alternately, just bolt the turbo stuff onto your N/A engine.

You can bolt the turbo stuff onto a N/A motor? Really? I has always thought that was a No-No??
Thanks

for more than stock performance you'd want to go true turbo. but for stock turbo power there shouldn't be a problem. although some have run turbo N/A's well beyond stock turbo power without much issues. VW really likes to over-do things. which is always good!

Consider the Callaway turbo kits available for gas Rabbits in the early '80's. They pretty well doubled the HP of an engine of the exact same technology as the n/a diesels, and the gassers didn't have steel reinforced ring lands.
No worries. Assuming, of course, the engine is in good condition.

OK, the standard aluminum head could handle it. But, what about the valves? One would need to upgrade to new turbo-compatible valves, right??
I just ran into a guy with an '84 turbo engine and crusher-worthy body. Supposedly destroyed head.

You could poke the TD's sodium cooled exhaust valves in, if you really wanted to. I don't think I'd bother though.
