Post by: numbnuts on July 22, 2008, 01:34:27 pm

If not should i just leave the back box on?

I personally do not think they are very loud with no mufflers. Some may disagree. I would use 2.5" and a good flowing muffler if you decide it needs one. Run it all the way and see how you like it. If its to loud put a good muffler on the back.

I dont know about the AAZ but I attempted a no muffler system on my 1.6 and DAYUM it sucked bigtime!
I took it back and got a 36" Glaspack installed and still to damn loud. Went back again and had him install a Magnaflow and I'm happy, still has a good tone and I can actually talk on the phone while driving. (hahaha)

My system is 3" turbo back BTW.

I cut both mufflers out of my 94 Jetta aaz, welded back in stock dia. pipes (cause it was quick) and found little difference in loudness.

It does sound a little bit more sporty. Not sure on any performance gains - as I hadn't driven the car on the road before the removal. Although it feels a little bit more "zippy" then my 95 Jetta aaz.

Aivars

ps I left the cat converter on.

ah, i was going to cut the soot trap off anyway and just weld in the same diameter pipe (pea shooter) for the rest of the boxes. So it shouldn't be too loud then? There are loads of sound clips on youtube for tdi's so should it be on par with them?

I used 2 burnt out glass packs on my 1.6 NA and they were larger diameter than my pipe...I had 2.25" pipe with I think 3" glass packs that slid over my pipe after it was stretched out a little. The pipe I made sure was completely out from under the car and under the bumper. I ran the intake out to the grill and it was quieter than my stock setup. I have heard the turbos aren't loud with nothing on them, but I don't know for sure. I do know the extra flow greatly helped my NA.

my AAZ has 2.5" from turbo back, with a res and straight through back box.

overall noise is QUIETER than stock - but sounds nicer. a little note to it.

the k14 turbine outlet (or t2 if you have it) is so small that you get bugger all exhaust noise.

with the electronic wastegate actuation, i notice a little increase in note and deeper, throatier growl when the wastegate opens - thats how small the turbo is.

if you're going to a bigger turbo, you might wanna keep a box - but if you just have stock turbo, straight pipes is very quiet.

even with just the downpipe, my AAZ still quieter than my mk1 LS gasser.
