Title: engine cuts out at high revs
Post by: MouseGTD on July 21, 2008, 09:33:34 am
i have a 91 1.6 GTD, not only is it pritty smoky but the engine cuts out at around 4k rpm and don't fire up again till the revs drop back down to about 1k. if i keep the accelerator to the floor it just revs and drops, revs and drops, revs and drops...

has any one had any thing like this happen or have any idea of what it could be?

cheers for any help 8)

i can't see it being the governor, the bloke that was trying to MOT it couldn't do the emission test due to it not holding the revs, so i'm guessing its not normal.

the fuel filter sounds like it could be it as the MOT tester said he thought it was a problem with the diesel system of some kind. is there any way of cleaning the filter or is it just a case of buying a new one?

yep you guys are right .... i got to lay off them paint thinners first thing in the morning :D

but i'll add this , the pick up screen in the fuel tank maybe plugged too .....

or the injection pump could be starting to get weak , and now needs a lift pump to help it out ...

or any combination of the above that may also include a small amount of air being sucked into the injection pump  through  the joints of the rubber to clear fuel line .

i've just spent the last 7-8 weeks converting it in to a diesel, theres no way i'm going though all that to turn it back lol

cheers for the advice lads, i'll change the filter first and see how it is, if that don't sort it i'll work my way back though the fuel system.

busted y00!, thought i could slide in under the radar lol

update...

i've fitted a new filter but now i can't bleed the fuel system through, when i loosen the nut on the top of the injectors off i get diesel spitting out and it will fire up and run then cut out and the fuel pipes stay empty. it weren't this hard to bleed through the last time, any body got any ideas on this? or am i doing some thing wrong? lol

You dont need to bleed these engines after fuel filter change...  just crank them for some time and and they start or u can fill the filter with diesel b4 installing so that you dont have to crank for so long!

sorted it, after stripping most of the fuel system and still not sorting it i found a loose wire on the fuel pump which sorted it.

now the clutch has gone on it.
