Title: What are these for? (pic)

was gonna move my defrost switch over, poped off the 2 center panels and theres 2 weird connectors underneath, afaik this car doens't have a computer that codes would be pulled from (93 golf td).  my 96 gti vr6 didn't have these...

could it have anything to do with ABS? my '90 G60 has a connector like that i was told it was for scanning the ABS for faults...

 :?  the ABS is off the G60 as well.. could it be some sort of diagnostic connection?

These are the 2+2 style diagnostic connections.  In the 1.9 TD they are actually unused and only included as part of the dashboard wiring harness - there is nothing to interface with diagnostics wise... :)  My '89 Audi 200 has the 2+2 connector to interface with the engine management.

More recent VW's should have the newer style connector, such as is sold with VAG-COM.  In my 99 A3 TDI it's located behind a small panel next to the ashtray - it's likely in a similar location in your 96.
