A friend of mine has a '97 Jetta, and the trans/diff, is making a grinding noise when he lets off the throttle. I think it's the ring and pinion going or an associated bearing inside. He says it's a rod linkage trans, and I said it should be a cable style. I am not certain though, and I have not looked at or seen the vehicle. Anyone having any advice, please feel free to do so.
Thanks in advance.

could be either

If it's a 2.0 engine it's a rod linkage, (020) if it's a VR6 it is a cable linkage. (02A) It sounds like it could be SMS syndrome and which case it is probably a rod linkage tranny or 020.

I'm sorry, I forgot to mention that it was a 1.9L.

IDI or TDI?

I believe it's a IDI. I thought TDI Jetta's started in '98?
