Title: Buying Timing Belt Kit and Tools for 1.6L NA
Post by: beowulf on July 13, 2008, 07:13:19 am
I'm looking into buying my timing belt stuff and tools from dieselvw.com, specifically, the "New Super Deluxe Timing Belt Kit With Tools for all VW 1.6D":

http://www.dieselvw.com/16SuperTimingBeltSet.htm

Does anyone have any experience buying from dieselvw.com?  Are they a good vendor?  Does anyone have any suggestions for a better place to buy the 1.6L tools (including the dial gauge and adapter)?  Thanks.

Thanks for the links, Quantum TD.  The discussion seemed reasonable and to stay on point.  I'm going to shy away from buying the timing belt parts from him because I like to stick with OEM.

I haven't been able to find anywhere else that has the dial adapter for setting the timing, though, so I may go with the timing belt tools.

Does anyone have any other suggestions for (possibly) higher quality timing belt tools for the 1.6L?  I don't think dieselgeek or metalnerd have tools that will work with the 1.6L, but would rather spend a few bucks more for tools that won't break in the middle of my first timing belt change.  Thanks.

There are some other sellers on ebay that sell a timing 'kit' that consists of the dial indicator (metric, I think) along with adapter to fit the IP, IP locking pin, and cam locking plate for about $80.  I need to buy the stuff to time my 1.6L TD and am in the same dilemma as you.

I bought this set a few years back:

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/VW-Audi-Jetta-Diesel-Injektion-timing-Set-New_W0QQcmdZViewItemQQ_trksidZp3286Q2em14Q2el1318QQhashZitem140248794031QQitemZ140248794031

The locking tools are nice (custom-homemade), and everything works great. I will say, that I haven't been blown away by the dial adapters. I think I had to shorten the threaded shaft, and the screw-in adapter is kinda annoying, since the indicator is lockied in with a separate allen screw, which often ends up on the back side of the pump, and often interferes with the injector lines (if you leave them on).

If I could do it all over, I'd get the cam lock plate and IP locking pin from ZDmak (even though the guy is a douche), buy a good quality metric dial indicator, and buy the Matra 2066 adapter online (or from dealer).

For a one-time user though, the ebay kits are fine.

Just to follow-up. I ended up buying a "diesel injection timing set" from Germany on ebay:
http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=140251720349

And then bought the timing belt tensioner tool and sprocket holder from metalnerd:

Metalnerd's service is phenomenal, by the way.  I had the tools in hand something like a day and half after I ordered them.  Thanks for the advice, everyone.
