I filled the tank a few days ago and reset the trip meter, I wanted to see how far I could get on that $80 dollar fill up! I was driving today coming towards a hill....when I felt the engine start to die. It picked up and ran fine for another few seconds then started dying again. It rolled to the top of a little hill then I tried restarting it. The engine cranked but no kick. Ahhhh damn, why does that always happen to me when I'm only another minute or two away from a gas station?? I thought I was screwed for sure. I grabbed the bottle of PowerService Diesel-Kleen I had, poured in the tiny bit that was left and it started back up! Idle was rough though. I immediately set out for the gas station. I didn't know how much longer the car would run, so I'd get it up to speed then turn the engine off going down small hills. I managed to coast into the gas station and put 10 bucks in the tank (not even 2 US gallons!) and drove home. The idle was still a bit rough but it cleared up after a few minutes. I'm kinda disappointed with the distance I got out of the tank of fuel. I was hoping for 900 km or more. I suppose my AWY tranny doesn't help much. Is 850 km on a single tank decent?

10.65L/100Km
Thats BADDDDDDDD

I guess we need to know how much diesel 80 bucks bought ya. However, if you've got a Golf or a Jetta and you used your entire 55l tank:
55l/852km = 6.4l / 100 km. = 44 imperial MPG = 37 US MPG
If you really only got about 50l into the tank, which I understand to be about what is typical without topping it up slowly for 10 minutes:
50l/852km = 5.9l / 100 km = 48 imperial MPG = 40 US MPG
Not too shabby! Dunno what specific engine/nozzles you're running...but as a point of reference using the slightly more efficient TDI engine: the mileage misers over on TDIClub shoot for the low 5's.

Yup... good question. On the other hand, what VW will take 80l ??!!! ;-)
Diesel's 75 cents a litre in Edmonton these days... RUG's 95 cents.... BOO YA ! ;)

Lucky out west :P

probably KARMA for trying to bootleg 400 bottles of beer eh Catlin? lol

Well do remember that this thread started in July of '08 when fuel hit its peak price. Either way, I don't think I ever put $80 in either of my cars. :-\
-
well to put $80 in to a 50L tank the price of diesel would have had to of been $1.60 (if i did my math right)
Did Diesel ever reach $1.60, did gas even get that high? Maybe he gots a modded tank?
another point of interest, the guy was disappointed with 852kms with an AWY trans.. 3.94final and .89 5th.. he should have been SUPER HAPPY to get that! nO?

Diesel hit $1.40 a liter here last summer,
-
then he must be telling truth :) lol
alot of discussion over something thats old and obsolete though lol
but still yeah he got around 40mpg with an AWY.. im impressed!

I get 530 miles outta a fillup in my 86 na diesel Golf. I suppose I could get maybe 550 or more, but I draw the line at 530. I dont wanna be stuck on the side of the road.

Once made 1000 km with my '92 MKII 1.6NA / AWY Jetta.
Drove at 90 km most of the week and accelerated slowly :-*
Typically we get 800 km / tank summer driving 110 km hour with our fleet of MKII 1.6D Jettas.
My AAZ / K14 MKII GLI clone gets around the same if I stay at or under 100 km hour.
