How hard is it to tear down a GC 4sp trany? All I want to do is tear it apart, check the gears and bearings for wear and reseal to trany. What specialty tools will I need?

Just making sure you know the GC 4 speed will have your engine screaming high RPMs down the highway.

No I didn't know that. The fastest I got the car up to was 60 MPH on the trip home and I don't have a tach. Its the factory trany. But that might explane why my engine and trany are sitting on my living room floor with a shot thrust bearing and scored cylinders. The owner before me used to drive the car 180 miles at 70 MPH once a week. I'm thinkin about putting a 1.6 TD in place of the 1.5 n/a. What would be a good match for either engine if I planed on doing a lot of highway driving?

My understanding is that the design is very similar... so you might get some good ideas from the pictures on Broke's site.

Looks like I don't need to worry about my GC. I talked to my old instructor from tech school. I'm getting a "E mode" 4 speed as he called it. What are the pros and cons useing this trany? I know it has a taller 4th gear then a 5 speed. He told me I would have to drive it like I hated it since it's not a close ratio trany. Better for highway driving which is what I'm goin for.

Well, you will be able to let out on the clutch in first....pull out your rolling papers.....seal one up...have 'er burned 1/2 way down before you get into 4th gear!!!!!!!!!!!!
You will either develop a lot of patience....or learn to become rather postal at the drop of a hat.
I wrecked an '84 Rabbit with an E-moder because I flat ran out of patience one day.
I honestly suggest you consider an alternative. I believe you will soon find the end of your rope.
I still have that trans in one of the wrecks if you need it............

Sorry....I am attempting to recover from very painful mouth surgery.
I hated that trans. Ratios so wide you actually aged between gears. Always behind the ball on revs. Into third gear as soon as you saw a hill on the horizon. Even if the horizon was still miles away!!!!!
This trans actually caused you to burn MORE fuel just to get the car to move. I would honestly like to neuter the dude who put this idea on the blackboard!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I lived with the trans for several years until my anger ruined the car....I was then relieved. Put all my gear into one of the Golfs, twisted the key, and didn't get around to gutting the car for several months............

Well it looks like it back to the drawing board for me. I would love to have a five speed. Not to sure I will be able to aford one for a while tho :( . I guess I will ust reseal mine and run it till I have the money for a five speed. If anyone knows of one layin around for a reasonable price shoot me a PM.

I guess I should say that the trany is for a '80 Rabbit.

As an honest comparison: my first Rabbit was a '78 with a closer ratio 4 speed. I loved that trans. I guess it did buzz the engine a bit more on top. But, I was able to get to the top. That had a 1.5 in it back then. I actually liked the engine, too.
The wide ratio 4 speed sure seemed durable and all. No problem there.
I drove that car at a time when I had to do a LOT of driving. Time constraints were always tight. Perhaps, your life is a bit more gentle.
Maybe someone else out there can shed more light on this.
My perspective remains honest though.
The trans is now sitting on the driver's seat of a gutted '83 Jetta. I still foam at the mouth every time I walk past it!!!!!!!!!!

Does anyone know what the codes are for the 5 speed transaxles that will fit in place of my GC 4 speed?

Burn, how would you say it drives? Is it doggy with the wider gears? Or would you say it has decent accelaration but no speed demon? Do you know what RPM the engine is turning at 70 MPH and what economy your getting w/ it?
