so I took my 1.6td jetta for a spin yesterday, and at wot, I ran out of fuel. I got some fuel in it, then start it up, and now there's a banging noise coming from the intake. It sounds like an exhaust leak, but it isn't. It "bangs" once an rpm i think, so I don't think it's the valvetrain. It doesn't get louder when I rev it, it's the loudest at idle. I really hope I didn't cook my engine. Has this happened to anyone else? Thanks for the help in advance

hmmm... does the engine vibrate bad at idle??? try cracking each injector one at a time to see if rpm's drop. you'll know when you've found the culprit.
could be many other things too though.

I checked the cam timing, and it's dead on. The weird thing is that the car still runs like normal. the engine doesn't really vibrate much at idle.

any suggestions?

any suggestions?
you have a midget with a large hammer living under your hood ......
might be wise to evict him soon :D

hipothetical: an injector dripping, stuck open or not atomising properly.
-
that sounds possible, i'll try to find which one is bad

damn my brain wasn't functioning properly.. if you ran out of fuel while at WOT, there is good chance there is air somewhere.

air? like where? it still idles and drives fine
