the last couple of days i've been rebuilding vw injectors .
did some tests by swaping out the diesel in the pop tester , and adding canola oil , canola / diesel ( 50/50 and 30/70 percent ) and waste 15-40 and 15-40 with diesel ( 50/50 and 30/70 percent ) .
by watching the spray patterns and raising the pop presure 2200 psi to 2500 psi , there should be no problems what so ever with running 30 percent canola , or waste motor oil , assuming it has been filtered properly .
once the 50 percent level is hit , no matter what the pop presure , you are no longer getting a mist but rather just a stream of liquid .
what i've seen , seems to agree with what i've been hearing from others , not to go over 1/3 when mixing veg oil or waste motor oil , and running it to the injection pump cold .
heating the oil would change that .
by the way , the merc nozzles set at 2500 psi sprayed much better than stock vw , or gtd nozzles at any presure .
all the nozzles where brand new out of the box .
off topic ----------------------
the old stock nozzles i pulled out of my car where poping around 2100 psi
put the merc ones in at 2500 psi , a bit more power , and almost no smoke , except right off the bottom just before the turbo spools up , then the smoke is much blacker for a brief second .
the engine is also smoother and a bit louder .
advancing the timing with the higher pop presure made a positive difference .

Interesting findings! I might just have to start a filtering system for the waste oil here at the shop and start using it.

I dig it. Thanks for posting your findings. Im interested in the heated version next. :P
Im may be trying for some merc nozzles instead of stockers.

So setting them @ 172 bar was the key huh?
Was the 2500 psi a good spray with just reg diesel or did you test it?
-
what about some tests with heated veg??? please please please

add 20% gasoline to the canola and see how it works please please please

it was really easy to make all the injectors hit 2500 psi ( i got them all within 10 psi of each other ) . ( if they wanted to be at 2550 , or 2450 , that is where they would be , i don't think there is much difference in the spray pattern between 2400- 2600 psi )
once i got over 2300 psi with the merc nozzels and straight diesel , the spray got much finer and more of a vapour .
2600 psi looked alot like the spray at 2500 psi
the above was with straight diesel .....
we where lighting paper towel on fire outside , then spraying it for fun :D .
the fire ball lit off much quicker with the higher pop presures .
with veg oil mix and waste motor / diesel mixes , the lower pop presures actually put out the paper towel . it wasn't until i got over 2400 psi that the spray got fine enough that the mist ( if you want to call it a mist ) would slowly light off .
as for spraying heated veg oil ...... i'm still trying to figure out how to pull that off ...... without damaging the porta power i'm using for a tester .
i'm thinking maybe submerging the injector and line into some boiling water till it's all the same temp . that would allow the porta power to remain cool , but i would only get one or 2 " squirts " out of the injector till i got cold oil in it again .
i'm working 3 jobs right now , so my play time is limited , but i want to do a test of veg oil before i finish my veg oil conversion on my jetta ( i'm about 90% done now ).

not that oil is cheap and your using used oil, but I am sure different grades say straight 30 or even a 5-40 might spray different? I wonder how much different 10-30 is than diesel? Keep telling your findings, this is great.

Just wondering what mercedes engine you get the nozzles from?
Whats involved in adapting and using them on a vw?
Also back on topic, how much filtering does the used engine oil need?

Do not run gasoline w/ veggie. Bad,Bad,Bad. The gas breaks down all residual veggie, plugs governor weights, injectors, pump starts to smoke. Have been running veggie in 42 car for 4 years now. Mostly VW and Benzes .
I have lost my pump twice to gasoline/wvo. Cut it w/ diesel or not at all. Have 20,000 on new 1.6td with sraight veggie cold with heated filter alone. It starts and stalls every morning but runs like a champ. Have had head off last week. All is well. My 2nd conversion ever has 58,000 miles (na1.6) and has only used 2 tanks of diesel. Every thing I own runs veggie... chipper, tractor, boiler, 2 furnaces, TDI, 3 1.6td, and the bar oil for my chain saw.
Open for question here or at my shops web site/email [email protected]
Hot veggie has power to spare, cold is slower and worse mpgs.

so basically you are saying those guys over at frybrid.com and numerous other biodiesel forums are misleading the public by claiming to have had good result thinning their wvo with unleaded gasoline.
i guess it has to do with bringing the viscosity of the used cooking oil closer to that of the #2 diesel at the pump.

my opinion about gasoline in vege oil .....
DON'T DO IT if it's a engine you care about .
and anyone running cold , unheated veg oil , will eventually be walking , or rebuilding their engines .
had a older non intercooled cummins ( pre 92 dodge ) apart today , what a mess , the rings , valves where like they where all glued together .
the guy who owned it took pride in running just about anything he could get his hands on , waste veg oil , used motor oil , hydralic oil ...ect.....
all unheated ......... the guy is a jackass couldn't seem to understand that the stuff he was putting into the tank was killing his engine .....
he climed he bought some chemical online that allowed him to make " biodiesel " in his "gas tank "
stupid people shouldn't be alowed to reproduce .........

the merc nozzles i used where from prothe ( btw vey quickly shipped .. thank you :) )
clean the injectors , remove the vw nozzles , install the merc nozzles , set the pop presure and your off to the races .
if you set your pop presure higher than stock ( 155 bar ) , you need to advance your timing so it is 12 degree's btdc dymanicly .
if you set it staticly to the specs in the manual , it will be retarded from the factory specs with the higher pop presure .
btw my spelling is horrible today ... i'm tired and need to find my bed soon :) .
