Title: Hi guys
Post by: Infinitrium on June 28, 2008, 02:52:07 pm
Hi guys, I just bought myself a 92 Golf with the 1.6 TD (car used to be NA). It has 216,000 kms on it but the engine has roughly twice that, something around 400,000 kms. I paid $650 for it. It seems to run pretty good, blows lots of black smoke under heavy throttle, a lot more than my old 93 AAZ did. It's got a little pinhole in the steel injector line going to the number 1 injector causing it to spray a bit of fuel when the engine is running. The clutch is worn and it's hard to get into 5th but I think that may be the shifter bushings or something related to it. Body isn't bad, one hole in the floor and a bit of the rocker panel needs to be patched up. The headliner is all falling down, it's still attached to the roof but it'll need to be replaced pretty soon. The rest of the car seems alright. The suspension, steering and brakes all seem to be tight. The interior is a bit dirty but not too rough. It's even got a decent JVC mp3 cd player in it, plus it came with a spare windshield (current one is cracked), alternator, starter and radiator. I just drove it 80 miles on the highway at 70 mph and it took 2.07 gallons, so that's about 40 mpg. I think I might get better mileage when I get that leaking injector line replaced. Here's a few pics:

and 2 videos: DIALUP WARNING!

This first video shows me and my dad driving along the highway at 70 mph with my brother following behind me. As you can see through the jiggling, the car doesn't blow any blue or black smoke while cruising.

The second video shows the engine idling after I changed the fuel filter (may be a bit of air in the lines). You can see the leaking steel injector line clearly. I tried putting some cold weld goop on it to see if it would stop the leak. It didn't but at least now it's not spraying, just dribbling.

Looks pretty clean for coming from the east coast. I love Golfs :)

AWY is a horrible invention. Fill it up with sand and go for a highway run, then swap it out

I actually tried to talk my brother into buying that car (since he was borrowing mine almost daily) but he decided to buy a 98 Explorer instead.

Where can I get replacement fuel lines? I bet that's one of those high markup dealer-only pieces right? Can you use steel brake line as a replacement? What's that about N/A exhaust?

Just my luck that the most expensive one would break! I did see a 1.6 diesel Jetta in a junkyard, it was a while ago and I don't remember if it had the pump or any of the lines left on it. I'll; have to check it tomorrow.

I have a used set from a 91 Eco (TD), $30 plus shipping if you'd like them. If you are interested I'll take a pic so you can verify the bend. The U.S. Eco had a turbo but didn't have an aneroid so it's possible it could have got NA lines at the factory.

Is that turbo sound normal?

hopefully it's just the sound recording quality... but yea it does sound pretty weird... almost like a drill or something   .  your car is also running super hot!  good for winter, but not so good for summer.

Lol, that temp gauge doesn't work. It goes almost up there like in 20 seconds after firing it up. Oh, and that isn't bad sound quality, it really does sound like a passenger jet engine.

Tell me the name of the passanger jet co, and I'll avoid them. ...

I have a sound and its a bit like a cicada. It's either the I/P or the cam! :?
