Title: 94 AAZ crank seal question
Post by: lews9146 on June 25, 2008, 03:27:58 am
I have the 94 AAZ motor. I would like to change the crank seal before installing the motor. Does anyone know if the crank seal (rear) is the same as the crank seal on the later American motors?

thank you in advance.

Not sure if this is in the right place

Not sure what you mean by later American motors. Here is a pic of the seal, the black thing around the crank.

It comes out of the plate BTW. I think later years had integral plate/seals.

by later years I meant 96,97 ,98. I presumed the seal came out of the aluminum keeper. do you think a later seal 96,97 so on would work. I'm not sure when diesel motors in the 1.9 size came to the U.S. so I want to get the right seal when calling VW

thanks

Just order it online. My experience is anything other than stupid plastic bits is never in stock at the dealer and you will pay more anyway. AFAIK, the later ones will fit, but will cost more since you have to buy the aluminum part as well.

'97 Golf was the first diesel I believe.

do you know where I can order it. Wasnt the AAZ motor Canadian only? Are you saying I have to order the aluminum piece as well or will it come with the seal?

thanks

It is one piece with the seal on later engines I believe, though I don't know when it started. Here (http://www.discountvdubparts.com/catalog/?N=&uts=true&Ntt=1995%20VW%20Passat%20VW%20Crankshaft%20Seal) is one place. the very last one is just the seal, the one above I believe the seal and aluminum flange. Or just take the given seal measurements and find a local seal shop. I have ordered parts from them, though there are many places that carry them.
