I have a 87 Doka with a 1.9TD. Great low end (probably could pull stumps)but I still have the 1.6NA tranny.
I can get a Gas tranny out of an 87 Westy (fire) Would the change in gearing from the diesel tranny to gas one help the top end (currently 110KPH)
Pros
Cons
Etc
-
I dont know about the gears but I took a complete trans out of a gasser for my car.
-
diesels are usually geared taller due to the lower end power. stock, there isn't much power up top. you can install a gasser tranny but i doubt you will like it. look for a turbo diesel tranny and enjoy some good fuel economy :) while taking advantage of the low end grunt of the 1.9

I built my aunt a TD and it uses a gas tranny. Just get the ratios and run the numbers. Some are better then others.
-
To wit, the ratios are here:
http://www.scirocco.org/gears/
-
Is it a syncro?
I can assure you that you will not be happy with a gas tranny. the ratios will put your rpms even higher. This is not really desirable with a diesel.
-
Mine went from 4000rpm @ 72 mph to
3000rpm @ 72mph
Removed a AWY Diesel trans for a ACN coded gasser trans.
1st gear is just a tad tall but once I'm moving it rocks.
-
We are talking Vanagons here ;) Trannies are totally different.
I might also add that the ACN was used on diesel MKIIs as well ;)

Indeed. But there are similarities in terms of gearing, and what you hope to get out of the vehicle. Here's a link to another forum from someone with a similar question, and my response:

While I do not have a ton of experience swapping Vanagon/Transporter/Doka transmissions, I am familiar with the diesel gearing, and the 1.9TD swap (did it in my dad's Vanagon). I can't/won't tell you what to put in your car, but I will say that you might have to make a frankenstein trans to get what you want out of the car. Check the gear codes and play with the numbers, then decide what it best for you.

Not exactly. The ACH was the trans used in the diesel MKII. The ACN never came factory in any diesel

aircooled vanagon is the tallest gearing out there, gotta use your bell housing of course,
-
here you go:
http://www.brick-yard.co.uk/VehicleSpecific/T3/info/gbx.htm
this gives you all the ratio's for the different gearbox's. On the vanagon, the NA diesel boxes are very very low geared. Over here people generally try to find an AAP or AAR coded petrol box, off the 2.1. These are the highest ratio boxes as standard and suits the AAZ pretty well. Once tuned up, or especially a TDi conversion, you need to start looking at custom ratio's or final drives...
this is all for a 2WD though there are codes and ratio's for the syncro boxes there as well...
-
oh yeah, and you need to take the bell housing off your diesel box as well as the input shaft (shorter on the diesel) for the swap over.
Aircooled box is pretty good, not quite as high geared as the AAP / AAR but its a very strong box, probably the strongest...

I was thinking on our side of the drink :)
-
did you guys get manual 2.1 wasserboxers, or were they mainly autos?
-
both, but only 4 speed in manual
-
My bad. These cars are getting so old and so many people have swapped transmissions that it can be hard to recollect what they came with every time ;)
-
Thanks for all the input.
Just to clear somethings up
It's an 87 that I imported from Germany
It came stock with the 1.6na diesel engine and tranny
The engine in it is a 1.9TD with 75,000KM
Now the big question where do I find the tranny code to compare numbers. I was looking at the tables you sent me to and if it's the last Diesel tranny it has a 5.50 final would going to a 4.83 really make that much difference.
So far the 1.9TD has not been modified and would any of the mods on this site(Fuel screws)overcome any drawbacks to this switch.
Thanks

It should be in the same place as others, on the bottom of the bell housing of the transaxle.

second picture has a spot highlighted to show where the code is. Also has other point like fill spot so you can figure out which way is which.
-
That pic is for an 020 trans. Definitely not Vanagon/t3.
IIRC the code is on the drivers side directly below the reverse light switch housing.
-
My bad, thought he was talking about his jetta.
-
definitely need to re pay attention. I read that before but totally forgot. My mistake.

Yep, what he said...
If it is the 5.50 final drive then pretty much any other box is going to make a big difference!

Actually looking at the chart again I think it's the 84.8 and up 1.6na 5.83 tranny; code ABF. I haven't been able to read the tranny code (needs cleaning) but it was a stock 87 1.6na and matching tranny.
What would then different final drive and gearing from a gas 87 vanagon do the top end currently 110KPM
1st gear 20KPH
2nd gear 40KPH
3rd gear 65KPH
