Title: alternator and tensioner bracket to fit a 1z
Post by: mollins on June 18, 2008, 07:50:57 pm
Hey guys,

Im currently in the process of building the first mk1 TDI in australia (as far as I know). I have just imported a 1z and will be running an m-tdi pump.

The only problem is that the engine I had imported has no alternator/tensioner bracket. I have tried the bracket from petrol mk3 engines, but they sit too high and hit the injector pump. I won't be running power steering or aircon, however, I would love to keep the serpentine belt set up.

So i was wondering if one of you guys had a spare bracket that you could ship across for a reasonable cost?

otherwise i guess i will have to fabricate my own.

Cheers

Mike

LOL...I'd like two things...

1.  Posting of the price that the dealer will want new given that P/N

2.  A priceless photo of your reaction when you see the "price of new" when you find out!

Hopefully someone maybe has a spare here they'd sell. Also...an ABF alternator bracket would work for you as well. Its the non-a/c version of the serpentine bracket that was used on the european 16v ABF motors...I've seen some CAN spec AAZ's that didn't have A/C with the SAME setup. The alternator is unique to the bracket and is tensioned differently than the traditional 1z/AHU, etc. serpentine brackets.

Among other places...for sale in this thread...

The ABA bracket was questioned to work...but will not in the end. The ABF bracket is a super clean setup if you don't mind paying the price. If I had the extra cash, I'd def. swap out the 1z/AHU one for the non A/C AAZ unit (if I could find another) or the ABF bracket. Sits lower on the motor, will clear the IP, etc.

Good Luck in your hunt.

I should have one tomorrow, complete with alternator if you are interested. I don't know what shipping would be though.

if you don't like the ABF setup...and have a complete one *or you'd rather have the A/C style 1z/AHU bracket, let me know. I'd be willing to trade for a "non a/c" serp setup or an ABF setup and would provide the 1z/AHU bracket and my rebuilt 90amp alternator. I'd pull it from the mk1 mTDI as I'll be retaining A/C on the b3 for now...

thanks to all for your answers

i ended up going with the ABF setup.

this is a tidy little unit which allows the alternator to sit beautifully under the pump. no tensioner to hit on the mk1 chassis either!

lines up nicely

i chased down a 6PK923 belt (6 ribs 923mm long) and it fits nicely

I bought these from INA engineering in the states.

as shown above his info is here (http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3494636&postid=43335383)

Very nice Mike... I love the ABF setup...so clean. Especially if you don't need the A/C, p/s, etc. I want to run one on my mk1 mTDI, but don't have the cash to throw down yet for one. Keep thinking someone will offer one up in trade for my 1z/AHU bracket, alternator, etc.

Guess what...hasn't happened yet! LOL. Very nice though.
