Title: Grenade my trans lastnight!
Post by: firestorm13666 on June 15, 2008, 09:23:43 am: Well aim looking for some advice on what trans i can use. I have a 1986 Golf 1.6D 5speed. I was doing about 60 or 70 something MPH. When i went to drop it out of gear to down shift i heard a loud bang. I was thinking *** the timing belt snapped. So i get out and look under the car,and i see a huge pool out oil. So i get back in and try to start her up and she fires up. Then i go to push the clutch in and it hits the floor. Well after i get the car moved i see some metal laying on the ground. It looks to be half a spider gear. So I look under the car and feel up around the trans and i have a hole in the case where the two haves come together. Well now i need a trans. Also what do you guys thing happened? Thanks

(drove 60km like this with extra holes being punched out on right turns - made it home...)

Well, good and bad. Good for high speeds and low RPMs on the highway, bad for takeoffs and low end torque. Personally, with a 1.6NA, I'd shoot for an original diesel trans; but that's just me.

you want a 3.94 ring and pinion for sure in an NA and it has to be from an 85 or later to fit.

Post by: lord_verminaard on July 15, 2008, 02:20:47 pm: Usually there aren't any symptoms until it's too late. Sometimes there will be some noise at speed but unless your car is exceptionally quiet at 60 mph, you won't hear it. Basically, any 020 that does not have a bolt kit WILL eventually fail in this way.
