Well aim looking for some advice on what trans i can use. I have a 1986 Golf 1.6D 5speed. I was doing about 60 or 70 something MPH. When i went to drop it out of gear to down shift i heard a loud bang. I was thinking *** the timing belt snapped. So i get out and look under the car,and i see a huge pool out oil. So i get back in and try to start her up and she fires up. Then i go to push the clutch in and it hits the floor. Well after i get the car moved i see some metal laying on the ground. It looks to be half a spider gear. So I look under the car and feel up around the trans and i have a hole in the case where the two haves come together. Well now i need a trans. Also what do you guys thing happened? Thanks

Many an 020 have fallen victim to self machining syndrome

(drove 60km like this with extra holes being punched out on right turns - made it home...)

Join the club mate!
By the way, does VW still use those sodding crownwheel rivets?
-
I have toasted 3 trans in this fashion. :(
Rivits FTL
-
do 02J/02A trannies come with the rivets???
-
Yeah they do, but for some reason they don't have that problem. Still a PITA if you need to change ring/pinion though.

Damn lol. Well i guess the Scirocco could have thing happen too if iam not careful. So what would be my best bet to get to replace my paper weight i have now? Thanks
-
AGS is a nice box

Whatever tranny you get, may as well take advantage of being in Ohio and have Broke do a rebuild on your replacement box (or at least install a bolt kit) so this doesn't happen again:

He's the best there is at 020's.

I found a trans but out of a 8V jetta at the yard down the street from my house. THe trans code is a ACN for $150. How well do you guys think it will work? Thanks

thats a good one i'd grab it

Well, good and bad. Good for high speeds and low RPMs on the highway, bad for takeoffs and low end torque. Personally, with a 1.6NA, I'd shoot for an original diesel trans; but that's just me.

go to this site:
www.scirocco.org/gears
you want a 3.94 ring and pinion for sure in an NA and it has to be from an 85 or later to fit.
-
Everyone here should know this by now, but you need a bolt kit in any 020 you expect to be reliable for long trips. The rivets are just crap.
-
What are the symptons of this occuring before the actual death happens? Sloppy drive line? noise?
-
Usually there aren't any symptoms until it's too late. Sometimes there will be some noise at speed but unless your car is exceptionally quiet at 60 mph, you won't hear it. Basically, any 020 that does not have a bolt kit WILL eventually fail in this way.
