I'm removing a AAZ cyl. head from my 95 Golf next week.
Can anyone clarify the type of socket required to move the head bolts?
It was suggested that a "special socket" is required - and since I don't have close access to the car, I can't check.
Thanks

Triple square, like these (http://buy1.snapon.com/catalog/tools.asp?tool=all&Group_ID=378&store=snapon-store). Get good quality ones!!

IMPORTANT SAFETY TIP (which you probably already know):
Loosen them slowly, incrementally, and in the diagonal sequence listed in the service manual:
else warping may result... the factory spec for straightness is very very tight (2 thou).

Thanks!
Final question:
On the official VW tool, I found on the Internet, the trip square
12pt part is about 4 inches in length. http://www.toolsource.com/head-bolt-socket-3452-audi-p-92548.html
Is the shank length show on this tool necessary to clear something on the head?
Or can I have a short shank and just use an extension?
I can get the 12m 12pt with a short shank locally.
thanks

Should be no problem with a shorter one and an extension.
