Title: Oil Change From Hell
Post by: Op-Ivy on June 11, 2008, 01:36:33 pm
I changed my oil yesterday. I have never had this hard of a time getting the used filter off. It was on there good! I ended up having to take the fan housing off to get at it. For the record, it doesn't take that long to pull and it ends up giving you a good angle to work at. I spent about an hour trying to get it off from under the car.

Haha yea. I should just leave them off. I don't use my AC and it's not charged anyway...  :P

Wow.

When they resist that much, a screwdriver nailed on the filter makes an excellent handle.

(Makes it a mess, but it's a good stress reliever)  :D

Yea I tried the screwdriver trick. That's why the filter is so mangled

Didn't work this time though :(

i never overtighten my filters.  especially with the filter in such an awkward spot (just another reason to get rid of power steering)

in fact some of those oil change places over tighten it and possibly crack the oil cooler...    which is why i think i had to change mine

i have found that large channel-lock type pliers (handles about 15" long) will overcome even the tightest oil filters. Grab 'em in the middle and give them a bit of a crush so the jaws can't just slip around the circumference, then just use the massive leverage to break it loose.

I feel your pain. I had to take off the whole rad support to get one off once. What a pain in the ass.
