Howdy Gang,
We were given a '79 Peugoet diesel with automatic trans.
Everything was in the trunk and we managed to get it back together
after doing a valve job and new HG
and it runs but with lots of white smoke.
It has a CAV pump
any tune up tips or links
thanks
hank

White smoke could mean several things. In this case how ever it could mean your timing is way to retarded and or your glow plugs are not working as intended.
Is your coolant level staying up and not blowing out.?

coolant levels good
the PO used a lot of ether- there were 6 empty cans in the car when we got it
the white smoke doesn't seem to clear up after it gets hot
any links on adjusting the CAV pump?
thanx

Sorry I'm not familiar with the Peugeot.

What does the CAV do?

It's a brand of injection pump. I think some Land Rovers had them also, so you might find some info by searching for LR Diesel pages as well.

I've got a CAV pump on a 354 Perkins engine, timing is done by pulling the pump, lining up 2 slots  where the pump shaft installs. Adjustment is done by a movable gear on the front of the engine that drives the pump shaft, not sure that your peugeot is the same. There is a little adjustment available where the pump mounts because the mounting  holes are slotted too.  Good luck............  A little extra advance makes a world of difference on the old perkins.

thanks for the replies guys
the Chilton manual we got to do the head doesn't help much for setting the pump--"take it to a Peugoet dealer"
I'll try adjusting the pump at the mounting bolts-
now I need to figure out which way the guts inside the pump turn
so I can figure out which way to turn it to advance the timing
off to Google land to see what we can find
thanx
