The manifold is simply a modified AAZ piece, with an adapter made from a big chunk of steel to mate the manifold outlet to the turbo inlet.
Gerry's Caddy is as mint as they can be found. The interior dashboard, gauge cluster and centre console is a complete one-off fibreglass and MDF fabrication that Gerry made himself!
The even cooler thing is that this `81 contains the full electronics, wiring loom, drive-by-wire throttle and electronic gauge cluster from a `98 Jetta TDI!
The turbo is BIG, but it's lifted right off the VW part's bin. It's a GT22V (VNT) installed in the 2.5L 150HP 5-cylinder TDI. We will be looking at outputs of about 200-220 HP (400 lb.ft torque) in a 2000# car when this is done... :shock: :lol:
Can't give any more details on the engine internals. Yet... ;)

BTW, did anyone notice the fitting through the front shock towers for the air bladder suspension system? :lol:

Looks good. I understand about not wanting to disclose some details yet, but I'm curious; are the crank, rods, and pistons not OEM?

Wicked cool. All of the playing around I have done with computer simulations (and it's just that, playing) show that any turbo application does extremely well with an asymetric profile with the intake being longer than the exhaust. No reason a diesel wouldnt be the same. Very impressive work indeed.
So, what's the chance an IDI cam could be made? ;)

The A3 TDI cam would be plug-and-play into the AAZ, -- but not likely with the ME -- piston/valve clearance permitting. The more aggressive cam timing and profile means less margin of clearance with the piston near TDC.

DIESEL DAZZLER's wild pick-up TDI has hit the road again after some extensive heart- and brain surgery...
To re-cap, this `81 had been transplanted with a 1Z TDI engine with full wiring harness and drive-by-wire electronics from an A3 Jetta.
Well, not to be outdone with his work so far, Gerry ripped out the A3 ECU, wiring harness, etc., and installed the counterparts from a New Beetle TDI! This ECU eliminates the annoying shudder exhibited by the A3 when installing a big pump and big injectors... this ECU also supports controlling a VNT turbocharger right out of the box, unlike the A3... Why, you ask? This freakin monster has a Garrett GT22V turbo, 11mm pump, and Race injectors, all in a 2000# vehicle!!!!
Even with a stock chip, the car hopeless spins the tires from a second-gear launch from a standstill until upshifting to the next gear!!!!
160 km/h (100 MPH) is dispatched at a pace that I have NEVER experienced in any car before.
Even with boost limited to only 18 PSI or so (limitation of stock ECU program), smoke is moderate off-boost, and practically not visible when spooled.
Next steps are to try out a 12mm pump, and a custom cam, and we're actively looking for someone who's interested in developing a custom chip........

I'm located in Canada and we do chips for A3 TDIs through V10 TDIs with dual ECUs. We do custom programming only, starting from scratch for each and every TDI. :) It's a bit more time consuming but it's quality work.

We've already chipped a GT22v equipped 1.9L TDI before (MK2 Golf):

That TDI was originally boosting 25 PSI at 2,000 RPM but he had too much torque, resulting in 2 broken CVs and one broken driveshaft within 1 week. It's currently tuned to 20 PSI @ 2,000 RPM and 26 PSI by 2,600 RPM and fuel maps are adjusted accordingly.
This week I'm importing a euro PD130 TDI engine from Ireland for a local vwdiesel.net member's MK1 Caddy, with a hybrid VNT20/GT22v turbo. It will be chipped as well.
We're more capable and dedicated than any other North American chip tuner who spend most of their time offering generic copies of "Stage 2", "Stage 3", etc. chips.
VAG-COM logs of several measuring blocks will need to be taken before sending the ECU to us for a reprogram. I have a loaner VAG-COM cable if you do not have one. VAG-COM software registration is not required.

The owner should consider going for a World Land Speed Record. The current record (http://www.scta-bni.org/Bonneville/records/BNIrecs_cat_g.htm) for engine class G (1.5-2.0L) diesel pickups is 129 MPH.
If indeed "160 km/h (100 MPH) is dispatched at a pace that I have NEVER experienced in any car before", then this truck should smash it with no problem!
