I have a chance to buy an 84 TD Jetta with an automatic transmission for the wife. What kind of fuel economy could I expect?

30-40 mpg? its because the 3rd gear is just shiite geared.  it was also the killer of HG's and what sort of destroyed the diesel rep back in the early days... nobody wanted a car THAT slow (n/a diesel rabbit with an auto box... start adding things like a/c & p/s and you now have a super slow, yet efficient for its time car)

Yep, at todays highway speeds your engine is real buzzy. Mind you it would be different if you were to turbo the engine and use the gasser auto trans....
