Title: stripping stud on belt tensioner in 1.5 heads?
Post by: FWD.MOTION on June 02, 2008, 01:22:27 am
Has anyone ever had any trouble with the threads in the stud hole on the head of there 1.5 or 1.6L engine when tensioning there belt tensioner?

Last night I worked all night to get my head gasket done and when i went to go drop the final tension on the nut holding the belt tensioner on the stud stripped and gave way....

I tried another nut and another stud only to find that the threads in the alum head came out like a helli coil!
NOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOO..........

lucky it didnt just come off on the hy way rolling the cam outta line with the crank resulting in melt down

well enough of my rant...just wanted to warn....I spent hours tapping and putting in heli coil to make the stud stopp turning to get good tension on the bolt.

be careful on that old vw tensioner and stud threads!

Well glad you recovered though, what a pain...
I don't think I've ever heard of that happening before. Don't think it's suppose to be tightened very much cant remember the specs at the moment though.

15 ft/lbs on an AAZ, probably the same on a 1.6 I'd imagine.

I didnt think it was very tight, I used a hand wrench on mine Thursday and thought I was getting it to tight. 15 lbs isnt much at all.
I even used loctite just in case.

The Haynes book quotes 33lb for tensioner same for bearing caps in the 1.5 Does not mention the 1.6 so it,s probably the same.

I seem to remember 30 ft/lbs for the 1.6, still, not a lot

Forsure I wasnt putting much more than the required force to lock the nut more that 33fp

Someone must have tightend it too much before but got lucky and when I went in to put tension she let go...

Heli coils rule... Ive used them in a number of tight situations!

also I see why they say replace the tensioner when doing the belt.
life's understood best in reverse

thanks everyone for the tightening torue on the belt tensioner pully bolt/nut
