Title: Jack Stand Placement Questions
Post by: subsonic on May 29, 2008, 01:08:56 pm
I would like to put my car up on jackstands so I can work under it.  Where is the best place to put them on a MK2 Golf, preferable with out them punching through the floor pan?

most everything ive seen has the location marked on the body. Little notches or just in between two dimples. Ive moved the jack around and those spots are the best. Closet to the tire. You get a pivot if you go to far away.

Thats good info.  I am pretty sure I know where to place the actual floor jack, what I am not so sure about is where to place the actual stands after I have it up in the air.

I stick the stand as close to the jack as i can get it. most times i leave the jack barely under one side, just in case something goes wrong someone can jack right away.

For what it is worth, I spent a lot of time working in total isolation in the country on my cars. I always manage to stick a good stout wood block or two under the subframe crosses or somewhere. The logic here is obvious. A few years ago, I had a friend that didn't.
I got to buy a new suit to carry his casket.

When jacking up the front, I run the jack from the front, put it under the rear motor mount.
Once it's in the air I put the stands under the part the front of the control arm bolts to.... what is that? the wishbone??
Behind the big bolt....back a ways to the flat area.
If it's outside, I make sure the jack and stands are on the same board.
