Well... sort of depends.
What engine do you want to swap into what vehicle?
I assume since you posted in the IDI forum area that you probably want to swap a diesel into an MKI or MKII?? Threads below will get you started.

you'll have to put a glow plug system in too.

Here is my post on another website for my conversion that isn't done yet. The glow plug and fuel pump were easy to re-do. http://www.motorgeek.com/phpBB2/viewtopic.php?t=17930

most of the trannys are the same as gassers, i would just put in the tallest one u can get your hands on, diesels have such a short power range, maybe like say 1000rpm-4000rpm, thats only 3k worth of usable power, long gears help it feel more like a gas car. since u can wind them out better.

From what I've been told any 4 cyl inline, liquid cooled VW engine, diesel or gas, will bolt to any 4 cyl trans, up to about '06 or so. The main things you need are a glow plug relay, which you can operate with a momentary switch, and a spin on fuel filter. Hook a wire to the IP that goes hot when the key is turned. I think that's about it.
