Title: Audi Girlings G60's on an MK1?
Post by: jebbesen on May 15, 2008, 10:24:22 am
I have a 1979 Rabbit TD that I am upgrading the brakes on.  My plans for the back include VW discs off a mk2 or mk3.  On the front I'd like to put on the Audi Girlings I have.  It sounds like on a mk2 you just switch to a mk3 knuckle/hub assembly to get the right mounts.  What are my options on a mk1?  Will the mk3 jetta/golf or the corrado knuckle fit on a Rabbit?  I also have the Audi master cylinder and plan on using that.

Sounds like you have to use adapters, http://forums.vwvortex.com/zerothread?id=3616913

Personally, I am not a big adapter fan. You don't really need the stopping power of those Audi Girling 60 Dual Piston calipers and the 11" rotors for a Rabbit.

Get The Front Spindles & Brakes from an MKII Scirocco 16V, it'll have Girling 54s and 10.1" Rotors. Combine that with a 22MM Master Cylinder and it'll be plenty and bolt right up.

I swapped the regular Front 9.4MM Vented / 20MM parts on my Jetta for GLI 10.1" / 22MM parts ans the difference is quite noticeable.

I put G60 corrado brakes , Back was bolt on

Front I got adapters fron Jman1066 @aol.com for 75.00 shipped with attaching hardware

He also makes the correct ebrake cables for the connversion

I put the axle on top of the springs , So I now have a 2'5 drop in the rear and Iam using gabreial air shocks from a 66 VW bug at 90 psi of N2 for a great  height.

Front springs from rabbitparts for a 2'5 drop up front
I have a new Scrirocco booster and master cylinder for the exchange when I do the 1.9tdi next week
Iam doing new steering box and control arm's ( linkage )
Wheels are new 15x 6 Le castellets from England, I have a set of Corrado seats and and new int ( 1400.00 )
The front fenders and core support are from New from  South Africa along with a new SF Caddy front bumper, Rear is new caddy SF bumpers

Why couldn't ya use mk3 knuckles and just bolt on the G60's?

If the knuckles are all that's different change them. I bought a pair from a salvage yard for $30, installed new bearing in them and bolted on the brakes. This was a MK2 but I don't believe it would be different if your swapping the entire knuckle on your mk1
Gives you a good reason to install new wheel bearings as well.

TI Lug's          900.00

If you don't want the calipers have him ship just the knuckles and your set. Already have new bearings pressed in as well.

No adapters needed.
