Title: TDi Newbie with questions.......
Post by: J1MMY on April 29, 2008, 09:28:16 am
Hi folks

I've used the search function but can't find any definitive answers to my questions and now I'm just confusing myself. So here goes...

I'm looking to raise the power on my ALH engine without compromising reliiability or losing too much of its economy - the polite way in which it sips fuel is one of the main reasons I bought the car. Having looked here and on tdi - club (sp).

Initially I was just going to go for a tuning module to take it from 90 - 117bhp but after snooping around it seems that with an injector upgrade, replacement turbo and a remap I could surpass that.

So.......what engine codes' injectors should I be looking for, and from what engine should I be looking to get the turbo for a direct swap? I don't want to end up with anything too laggy (I've seen some dyno runs on "the other site" as people put it, the figures are impressive but the characteristics of the power delivery sometimes seems akin to that of a turbo'd petrol lump!)

I don't want to fabricate or adapt anything as this is my daily driver and came into ownership after parting with my former pride and joy which was nothing but 3 yrs of continual modifying, fabricating, etc etc - something I simply don't have time for. "plug and play" is the new motto!

where in the uk would I be best advised to go for any mapping/ecu flashing/chipping (whatever is appropriate?) and finally, with those simple mods, what would my gains most likely be - torque, bhp and economy?

My apologies for such a demanding first post, and thanks in advance for any info, links, etc 8)

well usually when one goes for bigger injector nozzles, ones mileage drops a bit.  i'm guessing that the TDI might be able to make up for it by metering its fuel properly.  that is one thing that makes diesels shine.  the ability to make crazy power, yet still be fuel efficient... totally dependant on driving habits/style.

talk to RedRotors (pm him) about getting a tune.  never had experience with his tune personally, but from what i hear it is amazing.

the ALH could be brought up to a reliable 180hp with a VNT-20 turbo and larger exhaust & intercooler.  the internals are damn strong!  just watchout not to lug the engine and it should be fine (high boost at low rpm will bend your rods)

when i chipped and nozzled my 98 TDI my milage went from 50 to 52.5 mpg. Now that the big nozzles are out [sold the car to a friend ] it still get 52 mpg because it's still chipped. Better fuel management i guess.

Thanks for the info guys 8)

Problem is that I don't have any room for an FMIC (Car is a caddy van) without a fair bit of hassle so I just want to enhance what is there. From what car/engine would I find .216 injectors, and do the smaller VNT's all bolt on the same? From what I have read the VNT20 is from the V6 tdi and requires a custom manifold?

BTW I'm in the uk - diesel tuning is on the up here but by and large most still seem to be stuck on 1.8t's as the affordable weapon of choice under the bonnet. Been there, done that and worn the fuel bills
