Title: Last year for the IDI Diesel
Post by: moldyoldy on April 25, 2008, 07:44:59 pm
Sorry if this is such a basic question - What is the last year the old non-computer IDI type diesel was available in the US? Just want to know, so I know what my cutoff is when I go motor hunting this weekend. I know the TDIs are probably better engines, I just don't want to involved with all the computer crap!

Kinda depends on where you live actually... ;-)

I live in New York, so I'm guessing it ended pretty early over by me, as NY is not a diesel friendly state (politically, that is...although all the salt we throw on the roads doesn't help much either!)

1997 and younger Jettas/Golfs seems to be the general consensus in North America as the final year of the IDI... and at least in Canada it was a split year (some TDIs started to show up).

In the U.S. I believe it was 1992, then there was a 4 year dry spell for VW diesels until the Passat TDI in 96.

97 Golf in the US came with an AAZ, at least that's what the parts guy at the dealership said.
