Title: more diesel autocross videos.
Post by: Dr. Diesel on April 21, 2008, 09:44:58 am
a few years back, mazda sportscar owner's club autoslalom. Contrary to the cameraman's comments, the nitrous was not in use. (but if it had been, I probably would have beaten the C5 corvette that got me in the end)

Sorry, my question isent really topic related but, how do you launch ? What gear ? RPM ? Clutch speed ?    Because i have a AAZ with modified 11mm IP, FMIC, K24 25psi and nozzles and i want to know the best way to launch to beat those gasser #$%# lol

Thanks
Alex

i've got a small turbo and launch in 2nd gear. with the race tires you can see that it is almost a perfect launch. I don't think I'd be able to do it with a K24. best bet is to simply experiment. Treat every stopsign (that doesn't have kids running around nearby) as an opportunity and you'll figure out what's best for your car soon enough.

Ok, but some people say that with this setup, i could easily break my tranny or other drivetrain stuff if i do launchs, is that true ? Or how can i launch with less damage ?

Thanks for the help, it really appreciated

It's true. You are shock loading your tranny. The diff will die first (usually) You can't really launch without stressing the tranny, which leads to damage.

Nice work! I took mine to autox for the 1st time (for the car, not me...the Z isn't on the road yet) the other weekend. Had a blast and actually beat a few cars. No driving vids but a couple pics of the field...

Add another diesel to the autocross list.  There is video a friend took of my 78 Scirocco 1.6TD on it's maiden autocross last Sunday, but no luck yet getting him to put it online.  Results, won FSP by 4.5 seconds, overall raw time 11th fastest out of 88. local event tho, next month I meet the fast guys.

Thanks Giles!!!

As for launches, you just have to find the sweet spot where you don't burn out the clutch slipping it or spin the wheels too much.  When you make lots of power, you will break old VW parts.

I try to take up all the driveline slack before dumping the clutch. That way, the engine mounts take the bang, not the gears and cv's.
Other than some cheap, poorly rebuilt outer CV's on a very hot gasser rabbit years back, I've NEVER broken anything.
