Hi Gang,
Our '85 golf jumps out of 3rd and 5th sometimes.
I replace all the bushings and shift rods and gave everything a good lube.
Could the motor/transaxle mounts be one of the problems making it pop out of gear?

Check your fluid. From what I have read if you run out of trans fluid you burn up 5th first. Signs are popping out of gear.
Your tranny may be toast.

redline mtl or mt-90 are nice. worth the slightly higher cost than the standard trans fluid and it might bandaid a rough transmission for a while so you can keep driving.

If it is low, find the leak. output shaft seals?

The trannies came with a "fill and forget" service requirement. Over the years through evaporation the oil level can drop enough even without a visible leak to prevent 5th gear from getting the lubrication it needs.
SOP on acquiring any VW manual transmission car is to drain, flush, and re-fill the tranny with fresh fluid to the right level.

I drained and refilled the transaxle and let it it for a hour while I replaced the radio.
When I backed out of the garage I saw a big oil spot on the floor.
Thinking that I must have spilled some oil while putting it in the speedo hole.
I looked under again and the passenger output shaft seal was leaking in a steady drip.
I ordered up 2 new VW output seal kit and will hope that fix if the problem.

Its like someone else said the refill and fix the seal is only a band aid. The damage has started just hope its not too bad. It wont fix the problem but maybe it will help.

maybe replacing the seals will give more time to find a good tranny
are the ratios the same in a gasser transaxle?

I dont know much about that one but I dont think they are. If the bellhousings are the same then you can use one. You can look up your tranny code at http://www.scirocco.org/gears/ and get a code from a gasser to compare the ratios.
It doesnt have to be the same ratio but it needs to be pretty close.
