Title: Valve cover breather
Post by: fastvicar on April 15, 2008, 06:10:06 am
I changed my 1.6NA over to a turbo a couple months ago.  Still NA pump & valve cover, but no place to vent the valve cover into (simply vented into the NA manifold previously).  Since then I've been chasing a problem with excessive smoke coming out of the valve cover vent.  I've installed a check valve & breather cap, but it still throws out a large amount of oil mist.  What would the harm be in plugging the vent hole?

Um ya, you dont want to be plugging that hole.

It will blow every seals on the engine.

If there isn't a place to attach it to the intake (and sounds like you have allot of blow by anyway so I wouldn't recommend that) you can just vent to the atmosphere, I have mine going to a catch can with a vent on the top then the other side goes down under the car just behind the cross member.

So it won't be much different than what I've got now?

I'm currently venting it to atmosphere @ the cross member.  I've just never seen one throw up so much smoke.  It doesn't really change w/ rpm or boost, so I think it's just the cam whipping things into a frenzy.  Would one of those cam splash guards help a lot?  BFI is only asking $7 for one.

My TDI had a puck unit.  Any idea on a part # for the IDI TD version?

Nevermind.  World Impex carries them.  For $75.  There has to be a better (cheaper) way.

Vw's breather valve (hockey puck) is reference # 076 129 101.

Should be somewhere in the 25USD range.

I think I may have one in the garage, although I want to look at it as I'm not positive it doesn't leak at the seam. I had hellacious blowby, so the oil on it could have been coming from the hoses or around the rubber VC bushing as well.

That's the one.  $74.17  Ouch.

jimfoo, if you do have one I'd take it even with leaks.  I have ways to make them seal.  ("Oh, you'll seal alright.  Seal......forever!!!")

Just to make sure, you want the breather pictured on the top right of the valve cover? Sorry but I don't have a better picture of it.

yours is different Jim because you have 2 pipes going into it, the 1.6s only have 1. All you would have to do is block the one off

I'll keep that in mind.

And that head sure is pretty!  Personally I would have gone with Deutz Green, but for your application your color choice is probably perfect.

Well, here we call VW Stealwagen, but, have you tried asking for it in an authorized dealer?
