Title: Will these guages work for cylinder bores?
Post by: rallydiesel on April 10, 2008, 04:35:07 pm
I want to buy a cheap tool to measure cylinder bore for checking out junkyard blocks. I don't want to buy a block only to find that it's already at it's last overbore. I am looking at something like this:

Do I just stick it in and then measure it with a caliper? Is there a special technique to getting the most accurate measurement?

that paired with a micrometer.
put that in the bore and set it, then remove and measure it with a micrometer.

So you tilt it from one side to the other. The thumb screw just keeps the rods from extending, right?

Pistons have their size stamped in the top of them. You don't need to do any measuring unless you are looking for out of round, taper etc. But if you are rebuilding it's usually not an issue.

If you don't already have a decent outside micrometer, you might save money in the long run by getting something like this:

I would find it faster to use this as a single step measurement.  You can also set it to the max you want and just use it like a GO/NO GO gauge.
