Title: 85 n/a jetta 5spd
Post by: Duster 5.9 on April 08, 2008, 09:08:55 am
got a question here.My father has this 85 jetta n/a 5spd we got it from indiana last year, had a home made wvo set up on it. the problem is it doesn't seam to have the power it should. you can be driving down the road 10-20 miles and all of a sudden it will just start losing power and running warmer, nothing real consistant. then go away.last fall i put a new clutch and new seal in it. my father got it out last week was driving it and the front seal blew out totally. he was told that his exhaust may be plugged? what to you guy;s think. please ask questions, i maybe leaving something out as i'm not the driver.

if the front seal blew out you have too much crankcase pressure which is probably a clogged breather hose.

If the WVO setup is not perfect it will mess up the pump and injectors, which could be your problem.

Is it dual or single tank?

How old is the filter?

what if the cat is plugged?
2 tanks each having its own filter
pump was rebuilt by other person last summer.
injectors supposibly new also.
also my father never ran it on the wvo oil because he wanted to get more familiar w/ car. this problem was with #2. which is irrevelant because of past running on wvo i'm sure.

if it isn't a catylitic converter then what is it? the round thing about a foot from manifold just after bend?

that would be a resonator, acts in conjunction with the muffler

Yes, it's a wire mesh contraption built into the valve cover

Sounds like your fuel filters are clogging. I converted my 84 Mercedes to WVO and if the veggie oil isn't properly filtered before it goes into the tank, the screen in the tank will get all gooed up and act like you describe. Don't know if a Jetta has a screen in the tank or not. Also, if you switch over to veg before it's properly warmed, the car will die out as you describe, because the veg oil is still a little to thick to be pulled through the lines properly, so the motor will be starved for fuel.  Just some advice for when you hook your veg up again.

Title: check your compression-
Post by: squirrl22 on April 09, 2008, 08:08:27 am
One problem w veg oil, is it can actually create a low compression/blow by problem.  Here's what happens:   The veg oil may not completely combust- esp if you don't get it hot enough, or have the engine FULLY up to operating temp before switching to veg oil, or if the person before you
did this and clogged/coaked the injectors.
The unburned veg oil will coat the cylinder walls, eventually glazing them, get into your rings, making them stick,  and now you have low compression, AND increased crankcase pressure, AND oil contaminated by the veg oil- which may polymerize- when it polymerizes, it essentially turns into something the consistency of hardened jello.
Basic veg oil rules:
1. FIRST, check the health of your engine- compression check, injectors and pump check.
2. Filter to at least 2 microns or smaller.
3. Get the oil HOT!!! 180degrees F
4. Only switch to veg oil once the engine is Fully at operating temperature.
5.  Change your engine oil FREQUENTLY- ar at least have it tested every 1500 miles.
6. Pull your injectors after the first 3,000 miles after running veg oil, to check for coaking, and pull 'em after 5,000 miles, 15,000 miles, etc.

OR, just go spend some big bucks and get a Elsbett conversion kit.  They are the best, for a reason.  Special injectors, filters, etc etc.
