Title: could be the merc nozzles?
Post by: carrizog60 on April 03, 2008, 11:56:47 pm
hello

my car is not pulling strong as before(the boost wont go more than 1.6 bar when before it will go past 2 bar) and in 5 gear if i pull without the turbo is making boost(more than 0.5 bar) the car wont go,it will smoke but wont go...
pulling in shorter gears sometimes i see a whitish/grey smoke.

the timing is set at 1.05 and the injectors are gtd bodies with dn261 nozzles set at 155 bar.

the car started doing this after a head gasket replacemenet(for a 1.9 one),valve adjustment(is a solid lifter head) and injectors swap.

i dont think the turbo is tired because it would boost weel before and never do that again imidiatly after the swaps...

do you still have the old injectors around? just need some heat shields to test out your theory.

no,i only have 3 of them...
but they were old, would need to get new nozzles...
with the dn 261 and timed to 1.00mm i could do more than 1000km with a tank...my best was 4.6L/100km so fuel economy was improved but power has decreased as the boost did.
smokes more too.

did you take the turbo intake off to see if it is still in good shape? I had similal symptoms and it ended up that because I removed the line that opens the waste gate the turbo spun up between 25-30psi and the intake wheel spun off of the shaft and killed it. I was only able to get 5 psi and no power and black smoke because of plenty of fuel but no boost to burn it.

I was looking on autohaus and the aaz headgaskets per notches were different thicknesses than the same notched 1.6L ones. I have been looking into this as I want to do this switch someday, but I don't know if that would help your problem or not...or if the headgaskets are even different or just a typing error.

Those are not AAZ head gaskets BTW... it's a typo. Those part #'s are for AHU & 1Z

my guess on carrizog60's problem is the injectors, unless of course there was some damage condition that let to the re-gasket, then I'd factor that in too..

There are plenty of discussions around here about this.. try searching for your new nozzle part # here.

just a leaking HG that lead me to change,no damage to the engine.

i am considering buy some vw nozzles to put back but wondering what should i buy...
seems that the AAZ are quieter ,are they performance equal to 1.6 injectors?
if yes what do i need to fit them?just the nozzles or i need the 1.9 bodies as well?

It's the AAZ dual-spring injector design that is quieter,  as opposed to the nozzles... and they are physically taller than the 1.6l style, so to switch over you'll need complete injectors and probably hardlines as well, to account for the height difference (haven't run AAZ nozzles in a 1.6l engine personally but by eye, looking at both side-by-side, pretty sure the hardlines are different).

I have both styles of engine at the moment... from my personal perspective yes the AAZ injectors are slightly quieter but:

(a) much more of a pain to calibrate and find shims
(b) I actually like the Kenworth rattle

so I'll be attempting to retire my AAZ injectors when their nozzles wears out.

yes,solid lifter head

ok,so what about injector pressure?
keeping in mind that i would upgrade to a 10mm head and going to run sometimes on WVO waht is the best opening pressure?
should i increase to get a better atomisation?
