I have a silly project in mind. I have a 1967 bmw 1600 that I plan on swapping a diesel engine into. I was considering using the bmw 524td engine and bmw five series five speed but the added weight and length of the 524td engine made it seem like a bad choice considering the weight distibution and the fact that old bimmes are tail happy allready. i came across an old 760 volvo with the vw based d24t in it and it made me wonder if the 1.6td/1.9aaz blocks had the same drilling for the bell housing and if so I could put a 4 cylinder td in the bimmer with either a volvo 5 speed or a toyota celica five speed/ ford t-5 with an adapter plate from www.v-performance.com. 130 hp td in an 1900lb rear wheel drive car would be lots of fun.

Short answer, no.
The D24, D24T, and D20 engines (Six, six and five cylinders respectively) do not share a bolt pattern with the 4-cylinder 1.6 and 1.9 engines. 1.5, 1.6, 1.6TD, 1.9, 1.9TD, and 1.9TDI engines are all of the 4-cylinder VW bolt pattern, common to all VW 4-cylinder engines from the seventies through the late nineties (I think they changed a few of the bolt patterns and blocks in the late nineties and early two-Ks, but they were all gas engines). The 5 and 6 cylinder engines use the VW/Audi 5/6/V6/V8 bolt pattern.

that's too bad I guess an adapter plate wouldn't be the end of the world, the suzuki guys have worked it out for themselves.

put the 524 td engine in. If you're not autocrossing it, any degradation of turn-in performance probably would go unnoticed. :D
The old alpina and Hartge 'big six' E21 3 series cars had an even bigger lump up front, and they still handled well enough.

hell yeah keepin it bimmer. Alot of m20 conversions are out there and they perform very well. No auto-x plans. the diff is a 4.11:1 way too low, diesel drag bimmer

I'm actually about to do an M30 swap into my E21. If you'd like a 5 speed for your 1600, I can supply you with my E21's 155000km Getrag box. I'd like to use the E28 rear end in the swap, and if that's successful, the E21 (non-lsd) diff would also be available.
