Title: What is your 1.9TD pump timed at?
Post by: dieselweasel on April 18, 2005, 09:44:21 pm: My Bentley manual says not to go over .034", but farkman told me that is a VW spec and in reality timing can be advanced further. I have mine set at .0335" right now. Where is your pump set?

I know that's not a 1.9, but I hope he'll chime in here. The two engines are so similar that I imagine they'd respond similarly.

Post by: fspGTD on April 20, 2005, 11:43:57 am: My testing was done on a 1.6lTD engine equipped with an '84 "CY" injection pump and 1.9lTD 2-spring injectors. The results may or may not be applicable to you, depending on if you are willing to assume the differences in engine, injection pump and/or injectors don't matter. But I have not seen any other dyno test like this done on other configurations, so you might find my test results useful regardless of the differences in configuration.

Summary: The only power gain I found beyond 1.00mm was way up at very high RPM, and it was only very slight. IE: not very usable at all. Due to the serious starting issues (backfiring) as well as extra smoking running at 1.17mm, I would recommend 1.00mm. However, anything more retarded than that (less than 1.00mm) will significantly drop power, so be careful in setting 1.00mm precisely. (If you want to allow for a bit of margin of error that you aren't sacrificing power, maybe try 1.05mm to be on the safe side. Although you might experience more part-throttle smoking.)

You europeans must get the advanced "high NOX" timing. Here in the land of clean air the sticker shows 0.80mm as the spec. They do run a helluva lot better set at 0.90mm though.

And the single largest producer of sulpher dioxide in the US is a volcano on the island of hawaii, but let CARB ban diesels if it makes them feel all warm and fuzzy. :roll: Humans can be pretty damn presumptuous sometimes, they think they are the best at everything. Mother nature wins hands down when it comes to polluting...
