Title: Oil coming out dipstick?
Post by: stuvy on March 23, 2008, 01:48:16 pm
I have an 89 NA diesel and the only oil leak on the car is coming from the dipstick. I replace the oring on it and it just pushes the dipstick up and poors oil out of the tube. Whats the best way of getting this to stop. Sorry if its a stupid question, but I am a diesel noob.

I don't know too much about n/a diesels but there should be a bolt holding the dip stick tube in place. When I bought my '89 the seal/o-ring was missing there too, so I did a bit of a hillbilly fix and put 2 o-rings on and put a few wraps of electrical tape around the tube just below the ridge, over the o-rings and just above the rings. Then I shoved the whole assembly back into the hole, which was rather tight, put the bolt back and it sealed rather well. 23,000KM later and still no leaks!  :)

EDIT: Disregard my original post, I thought that the whole assembly, including the tube, came out...

If you seal it up correctly, and it is bolted in, and you still have oil coming out, time for a compression check.

If you mean that it is coming out of the top of the tube then you most likely have a clogged crank case vent screen. It's the donut looking thing on the valve cover.

Yep it pushes the dipstick out of the tube and oil comes out the top. I will look into replaceing the screen. Thanks

is it over filled with oil?
try running it 1/2 way between the 2 lines on the dipstick .

but like was mentioned before , you more than likely have blow by on your rings , and need to do a rebuild on the motor .

The oil level is fine. It usually ends up being low at this point, as oil continuely comes out the dipstick. There is a hose coming out of the valve cover, is that a valve or a place to relieve some crankcase pressure? I don't want to rebuild the NA pos. Its only there as the td that was originally in the car apparently threw a rod or something (I bought it from a freind).

Good catch Andrew.

Yes that hose going from the valve cover to the intake could be clogged, or the screen inside of the valve cover
