Title: wtb K24 turbine housing NEVER MIND, GOT THE BOLT OUT! (pics)
Post by: saurkraut on March 20, 2008, 05:36:35 am
I'm having a little trouble removing a sheard off bolt in my current turbine housing.

Any one have a useable one (no broken bolts) they'd like to sell?

Never mind.

I got it out.

With a snapped off drill bit in it and all.

I welded a nut onto it, and after a couple trys, out it came.

I used my torch with a welding tip on it.  I got the bolt head glowing red, then let it cool slightly and then use a box end wrench/socket to slowly work it loose.  I had to chisel off one of the clamp plates so I could get the heat into the bolt threads.  My biggest problem was that the bolt heads were so corroded that I had to use 3 different sizes - 13mm, 12mm and 11mm.  On the last one, I used an 11mm 1/4 drive socket with a 1/4 square key and a tiny cresent wrench and the torch technique.  I spread this over 3 evenings so I didn't get too pissed off and do something I shouldn't.  I didn't think I was ever going to get them out.  Couldn't have done it without the torch.

Yup, I used the gas axe too.  This is the third K24 that I've rebuilt.  I don't even try to loosen the bolts with out heat.  Heat to bright red, and as soon as it turns black again, put a wrench on it.  Then toss em into the garbage.  Mine corroded down to 12mm.

I might have put the wrench on the one that sheared a little early.
