Title: Can IM bearings be reamed out of engine?

Do IM bearings need to be in the block to be reamed or can I just bring the shaft and bearing to the machine shop?

Here's another somewhat related question:

Where does the oil go after the pump? Does it go through the oil cooler before the filter or after?

If you buy "Clevite" or "Durabond"
   intermediate shaft bearings, they
   don't require reaming. They're
   pre-sized.
   
   If you give me a few minutes, I can

   I have a set here that I bought recently,
   they're "Federal Mogul" Part #1726M

   The "Clevite" part number is #SH1209S

   You can get the "Clevite" SH1209S bearings
   at www.burnabyautoparts.com for around
   $20-25 (Cdn.

Thanks. Actually, I put new bearings in last year. I think they were Dura-Bonds. I found the IM shaft to be really tight in these but everyone was saying they were pre-sized so I left them like this. I have since had really low oil pressure. I am just preparing to have to have the bearings reamed despite being supposedly pre-sized.

This time around I bought the Federal-Moguls so hopefully they will not be so tight. It just sucks that I have to pull the engine to replace them.

if they were installed improperly, they could have ended up out-of-round or cocked in their bores. Both cases would cause higher than normal friction.

I'm not sure how it would affect the
   oil pressure (high or low), but you
   have to make sure the oil holes, in
   the bearings are properly aligned
   with the drilling on the block.

   And the oil channel in the rear
   bearing should point in the direction
   of the vacuum pump.

   Just a couple of thoughts...
