I've got 1.9 TD pistons but some one has increased the grove size of the last ring on the pistons. The size is suppose to be 1.75x2.0x3.0x79.5mm of 1.9td pistons but the ones i have measure to 1.75x2.0x4.0x79.5mm.
So rings from 83 rabbit/quantum and 1.6 petrol have these measurements...
can i use these petrol rings in my 1.9TD.... will they hold? any difference in material and all?

It may take a day or two so relax a tad someone will reply.
I'm going to guess no they wont work.
I suppose if the pistons had the same size ring lands and the same bore you could (maybe). But I'm gonna go with why would ya want to?

I've said it before and I'll say it again...
One of the things I really like about the fine folks on this forum is that they don't inject with their opinions if they can't commit to the accuracy of what they are saying.
So if you don't get an answer to your question it's very likely that no one knows the answer definitively enough, as opposed to you being ignored.

i know with some of the really old chrysler flathead engines , you could get "shims " that take up the play when the ring lands open up due to wear .
last year i also rebuilt a 1972 honda xl250 factory motocross bike , the big bore kit used was no longer available in the mid '70's , so i ended up buying 2 seperate wiseco ring kits , and maching a couple of the ring lands to accept the slightly thicker rings ....... and it worked very well .
now going from gas to diesel , i'd expect the rings to be slightly thicker for more bearing surface to reduce wear with the higher compression .
now your thinking of going to thicker rings yet again .
i wouldn't think the temper of the rings would be different .
ring tension onto the cylinder wall might be different .
if it was myself i'd give the gas engine rings a try , unless someone else can think of some sort of disaster waiting to happen by using them .
maybe fire off a email or 2 to some piston manufacturers and ask them ... maybe make sure that they sell the rings that fit your engine first .

i believe the only way out is to just use the oil scraper rings from a gasser - and use the diesel compression rings.
I had seen a build done once on an old nissan diesel engine - they used some petrol rings - and it suffered from blowby which got worse by the day.
But Ive never seen VW watercooled gasser rings - so this maybe different.

U mena the gasser ring and the diesel ring are identical??
the top compression rings have the same size in both engines... but the oil rings are of different size...
what i am worried about is that there mite me difference in the material of the rings for TDs and gassers... i dont want to end up getin my motor overhauled the next month again!

Me too... is there any reason why you can't just get the rings the VW gods intended, and sleep well at night ?? :wink:
The compression temperatures and pressures are very different between the two types of engines.... for starters.

In the beginning of this thread...
I said that the 1.9td pistons i have, the ring measures to 1.75X2X4mm... now the 4mm which is the third ring; my friend( a vw nut) and i think that the previous person whoever got the engine rebuilt might have got the groove opened up from 3mm to 4mm for the third ring due to non availability vw parts in pakistan. Then he opened up his engine and he had the same problem altho he got rings for the 1.9 td AAZ( without quoting the engine number) from uk which measure 1.75X2X3mm...
So either some actually did open up the grooves for the third rings on both the engines.. or may be we are not aware that some 1.9tds did have 1.75X2X4mm ring size.
SO if some one can clarify that whether our pistons were messed with or whether 1.9tds did have that 4mm third rings...
Pistons are too expensive to replace for me.. so the only way out is to get the 1.6 gasser rabbit 1983 rings which measure 1.75X2X4mm...
I believe this is not recommended??

AAZ 3rd rings are normally 3 mm, at least that's what mine are and what I have seen listed for them.

So every one agrees that no AAZ came with 4mm third rings?
Should i go for the gasser rings?
