Title: New way to connect DP to turbo. No bolts, just V-band.
Post by: subsonic on February 23, 2008, 03:28:12 pm
I was cruising the web a few moments ago and came accross this.  Looks like someone came up with a way to remove the bolts from the t3 turbine housing that connect the DP.  They then milled the flange into a circle, and milled a groove into it so you can hook on a 3" V-band.

Think this would make custom DP's easier to make?  Course, ya have to machine the turbine housing.

Here is a link of pictures.

So instead of welding a bolted flange to the end of an elbow, you weld that V band flange instead.  No work saved there.
It allows you to be a little sloppier in lining up the elbows, since you can rotate the  connection at the turbo. You can mess up as much as the flex part will compensate for. (if you have a flex section).

Oh come on.  Where is your pride in craftsmanship?  A little blue ink, a good sharp hand file,  you could do it easy.  Post a picture of your  housing when you finish it 3 months from now

I haven't looked at your link, but is it possible you're looking at a factory made housing from a different application? I've seen that setup on bigger stuff........

if ya want a vband setup, why not make a flange with a v groove, and bolt it to the (4bolt)turbo(no machining required on the turbo)
then you can bolt your vband style dp right on
when removal is necessary, just disconnect at the vband, instead of worring about breaking bolts

I just threw it out there cause I thought it was neat.

You bring up a point that might be of actual interest.  This flange setup might give someone the ability to do a quick changeover to a different turbo.  I know that my 3" DP from Dave will be setup for a certain manifold and turbo.  If I want to swap turbo's, they might not mate up to the DP.  I guess if you had a double ended V-band section of pipe, you could do a swap with less difficulty.
Would interchange ability be a benefit for anything? Autocross or dragging? Commuter to weekend?

Of course you could just buy one of these sweet puppies....

Utilising a V clamp flange and a free 4 hole clamp flange, the best of both worlds?
