Title: Where to find 1.9 parts in the US

I'm looking at buying a used engine that I'll rebuild before dropping into my '82 Rab and my '85 Cabrio.  I can get a 1.6TD or a 1.9TD.  I am leaning towards the 1.9TD, but I was concerned about getting parts for this engine in the US.  Are the rings the same as the TDI?  How about bearings and other rebuild parts such as valves etc.?  Anybody around Atlanta want a 1.6TD or 1.9TD while I'm shipping them in?  PM me.

1.9 parts are available on the net, some more readily than others, but they are there. Rings are the same as at least the earlier TDI. Depending on the TDI, valvetrain components can be the same, earlier TDI con rods also work, maybe later ones as well, though I'm not positive. Iz/AHU manifolds will bolt up. I even ordered the earlier style rod bolts from my local dealer as there were one of the harder things to find on the net.

So, if you could get a 1.6 for $1000 or a 1.9 for $1500 which would you get assuming that they were both complete from pump to turbo and either would have to be rebuilt?  Is the 1.9 that much better?

I'd get the 1.9 myself, but maybe because that's what I already bought. If you do, just be sure you get the crank nose repaired for a TDI timing gear.

A couple of reasons. The block needed to be bored out because it was so worn from dust ingestion, and oversized AAZ pistons are a little harder to find. The head also got trashed with a pre-chamber coming out and beating one piston to death as well as destroying the hole for the pre-chamber. Also, since I have the engine in a Land Rover, it would run really hot on hills, wether because of the weight, 3500 lbs, or the radiator size, or both. I figured an M-TDI would create less heat, and since I had to buy pistons and a head anyway, the added expense wasn't that much more. I would also have better torque for off road, more hp and better mileage to boot.

I will keep that in mind, as I'm buying an engine of unknown quality with the understanding that it will probably need to be rebuilt.  What needs to be done to the pump to run M-TDI?  It's just a fuel screw and timing adjustment, correct?

At the very least, a larger head, and if it is an older AAZ, the plunger foot won't fit the cam plate, so it would need to be changed. I'm not positive of everything that really should be done, but for a proper pump, it sounds like a 10mm or larger head, TDI cam plate, TDI control lever, and probably more. But it is supposed to run ok with just the AAZ cam plate and a larger head.

I have a pump that I bought off of Ebay that a guy was using on his M-TDI.  I don't know if the head is upgraded.  He told me that I just needed to adjust the fuel screw to run it on my 1.6.  Hrmm...  maybe it has has been modified.  I do know that it is freshly resealed.
