Title: bmw 524td M21 timing tools
Post by: dotterweich on February 11, 2008, 03:23:57 am
Hey guys, I recently bought an '85 524td, and drove it from Vermont back to my hometown near Buffalo, NY. When I got home, I decided to pull the timing cover back, and the belt is looking pretty sad. I can't believe it didn't break on the journey home, and now I'm afraid to start it until I change it.

Problem is, according to the shop manual, you have to lock the cam, crank, and pump to do the job. I understand this is normal. But finding the tools is a challenge. I managed to track them down from Samstag Sales, a BMW tools vendor, and the camshaft lock is over 300 dollars! The pump lock and crank lock are each well under 50 bucks.

Does anyone know where I can find these tools in the US for a more reasonable price? I found a few places in the UK that have them for like 60 euros for the whole set, but they only ship within the UK. Am I outta luck on this one?

Thanks guys -Andy

maybe someone from the UK will be nice enough to buy them and ship to you?

I know the pump and crank lock can be done with drill bits, but something would have to be made for the crank (or use a pair of vice grips).
