Title: td pump shaft end play?
Post by: skifree on February 09, 2008, 06:17:23 pm
I have two td pumps sitting on my bench and when I move the gear both have play in and out. is this normal? Or should I  have one rebuilt for my rebuilt 1.6td vanagon project?

My AAZ pump has no in/out play, so I would probably have it rebuilt as whatever is causing it can't be good. Maybe run one, rebuild the other and then swap them.

Title: Normal

Hey

End play is normal as there is an internal spring that holds the shaft
from floating. but there is a fare amount of in and out play if u move
it by hand.

and yes .15mm is the max allowable limit for side to side play.
i don't usually like to see any more than .12 though. and will install
and align ream new bushings if over that.

BTW i've seen someone selling new bushings on the web for the VE
pumps.  unless you have the proper tools to press fit them perfectly
and then align ream them 17mm don't bother.
