bleached bora had a line on some brand new kollbenschmidt heads... not sure if any for the 1Z engine though.  i think jimfoo might have bought one?

there's a guy on tdiclub who does awesome head repairs... might be a good option  :)

what happened to your head?

YEP, BB has em.  If you check the original Group buy post for the Kolbenschmidt heads,  there was info on the tdi heads.  You might need to check to see if the price is still valid.

a hydraulic lifter sheared the top right off, damaging the lifter bore+scoring the cam when the hydraulic piece bounced around in the bore

that happened because the timing belt tensioner stud came out of the head  at idle and valves hit the pistons, the plunger in the lifter made a stress in the center of the lifter with cracks radiating out from the center

yea the belt whipped off driving home from waterfest, and i actually put it back together on the side of the road and crossed my fingers and it ran, drove it home 2 hours, yea it didnt sound right ,but it ran,,absolutely amazing!!
i would consider it beyond repair, for a "race car"

mines not a 1z  btw  ,,,its an ahu

yea possibly....
surprisingly the pistons look ok,but for kicks im pulling the rods to check for straight, and see if cometic can make me up one of those new gaskets with o rings incorperated in them
the engine is already torn down, and the bearings look ok,no shavings ran thru it,yay
these look like a real good idea

Hey - I need a new head for my 98 jetta tdi engine as well. I let the timing belt replacement go and at 125k, the belt snapped. Time for a new head and valves (and hopefully that's all). I heard about a guy on tdiclub named franko6, and he will re-do your head for you.

Right around the same time, the rings went in my 1.6 td in the rabbit pickup, so I really have my hands full of repairs for now...

hillfolk'r....I bought a AHU motor that the exact same thing happened.  The number one exhaust lifter bore is chewed up from the lifter exploding into lots of big and little pieces.  THat valve is shot as well....but all the other valves look ok, and all the other lifters have damage as well.  So I need a cam, at least one valve, and 8 lifters.

As far as the head goes, I dont know if someone can weld up the bore and then machine it back out to the proper size....who knows.  If you find someone who can, post it here or shoot me an email.  I can't drop $1,100 on a new head.

What he said. I've talked to this guy on the phone. He's the real deal. He can fix any head, and knows the RIGHT way to do it. I think the photos speak for themselves. And, he only really works on TDIs, so he knows his ***. Frankly, that's the way I'd go if it were me.

I've got a 1998 AHU that had a lightly warped head. I was going to send it to Frank, but the wait time was a little long (about 1-3 weeks) fo me at that moment. If time were not an issue, I would have gone with Frank. If you're playing with the bottom end anyway, then the wait may not be an issue for you. Fixing your chewed lifter bore should not be a problem. I think he states that clearly in his TDIclub listing.

Either way, good luck on the job

Hey thanks for the info guys.  This dude does look and sound like he knows what he's doing.   I'll have to give him a call.
I may check out a shop here local that a buddy of mine just used to weld up his AHU head....he dropped a valve or something so he had damage on the combustion chamber side.  They did a nice job.  They work on lots of diesel stuff and seem plenty familiar with TDI heads as well.  So well see.  I have time so no huge rush.

I was just looking at the $289 new 1Z heads on Volkswaparts website.  How good can those be I wonder.  Maybe a "you get what you pay for" type of deal.

I have talked to Franko6 before,  appears to know his ***. Sweet pics of the work on that head.
I needed 3 lifter bores redone plus all new lifters, cam, valves etc...
It was cheaper for me to buy a new AAZ head from BB.

Make sure he knows you are from here.  I think because of the old group buy deal we are getting them cheaper than his normal prices.  All though that may be the GTD price.  Looks like a good deal.  Nice B-Day present 8)

Hill,
Did you ever do the order? It's hard sometimes to tell screen names from real names :). I'm about to order a couple more heads in and would like to figure out how many I need :).
Thanks,
-BB
