Title: how much loss without intercooler
Post by: the caveman on February 06, 2008, 08:13:33 am
I have changed my mind yet again and will put a TDI into my transporter but to save time [ of which i don't have a lot of ], lack of space and extra expense i was thinking of not even bothering with using an intercooler.
i am going the mTDI route but besides the power loss would there be any other issues?  at least that way i don't have to worry about having to put a huge head on the pump but could i still bigger nozzles or should i leave them stock

possibly more black smoke out the back? less efficiency/power?  thats all i can think of.  oh and higher EGT's?

Inability to add more fueling if desired due to high EGT's.  You really need to run an egt guage in anything that heavy as well, just to be sure you're safe.

i think water/meth injection would be a viable solution for you... you wouldn't need to use it all the time.. just for when those EGT's peak and you still need more power (going uphill etc)

why would it be different than any other diesel with a turbo but no intercooler?  If the fuel was adjusted for the less dense charge wouldn't a tdi with out the intercooler benefit be just that, less power but stll retain all the other di caracteristics?

I can't see how you'd adjust fueling on a TDI without doing chip tuning...

if you are talking M-TDI then yes, you are right

i run no intercooler
use water injection, injected right into the turbo
i use an old  washer bottle and a carb jet of like .040....
it feels a little like a nitrous hit
heres my current jet,a pitot tube for an airplane

the mk2 washer bottle i use sits in the pass.side footwell, and ihave a button taped to the shifter
i hit the button when i floor it,and the boost comes on
i  can even pulse it and whatnot,to help add power at part throttle
i used 1/8 inch copper line as you can see
i tried larger tubing, and found i needed to add a restrictor because i was adding too much water and "putting out the fire"
i use blue washer fluid
ive used as much as a gallon in 500 miles ,and as little as 1 gallon in 1500 miles
poor mans nos,i like it better cause its sooooo cheap, and a great power adder
its real hard to tell but according to (my) gtech,it gives around 20 hp and 35 ft pounds at least
and thats rated as "net"
