Title: TD vs NA crank?
Post by: MaxHedrm on February 02, 2008, 04:01:34 pm
I'm considering a TD block & head listed over in the classifieds, but have a question...

Is the TD crank the same as the NA crank? I know where I can get new pistons for it, but have no idea on the crank, so I am wondering if reusing mine would be doable.

It is same.

Below is cut and pasted from the white paper, cut from the section specifically for turbo diesels.  I seem to remember something about Ion-nitriding also??????

A number of changes were made to the crankshaft. The front end of the crankshaft was reinforced. The highly loaded crank-pin, at cylinder 4, has its radius induction hardened and the oil hole ground while radii at the other pins are roll-hardened.

But.... the non-turbo crank will fit.  The question is will it last as well????

my money is on it lasting just fine

i'm suspecting that if its a hydraulic engine that it MIGHT have the turbo spec crankshaft.  they really over-engineered the crankshaft for the turbo.  it can withstand more than double, or even triple (as MJF has produced 200+ hp   with one)

you're not looking for 160 hp are you?    should be fine.  just get the crank polished before you re-install it

Yeah my 1.6 dynod 193.5whp with the td crank today, should have made more but my wastegate was opening too much, should have a 200+ dyno next week.

on a 1.6??? SWEET!!!! would be cool if you sold a whole 1.6 stage 5 kit including Giles pump... 200 whp    (including your ported head, manifolds, dp, and anything else one might need...?  i would almost like to try that on a bone stock 1.6TD (except maybe with the ported head) to see how long it lasted

if a 1.6TD rated at around 68hp can make 200 hp, then a TDI rated at 90 using the same ratio be able to make around 260 hp, but the torque would be insane!

Yeah on my 1.6/1.9 head combo, I've been driving it hard for the last month or so, no issue, runs great. I am a bit disapointed to be honest, the only time I had this wastegate issue was on the dyno today, I hit 28-29 psi when my wastegate open and a second later it drops down to 22 psi, tried it on the road after the dyno run and no problem holding 28 psi all the way to 180km/h in 4th gear with the current 4s tranny (5800rpm).

For some reason I clicked time on the printout instead of rpm for the bottom of the graph, I'll fix that on monday back at the shop, did I mention the new shop has a dyno 8)

how are you controlling the wastegate? is it just disconnected or are you running a controller?

You can see where my torque and HP are doing great and are fairly flat and than they drop quite a bit, that is when my boost dropped big time from my wastegate issue, where it completely stops is when I let off the throttle at 6k rpm

I am using a manual boost controller, I am going to get a good electronic boost controller like an apexi and do a few other things and try for 210 on this setup, after that its time for new manifolds, different turbo, bigger pump and 240whp

Actually there is early 1.6NA crank in my engine 8) I like the old style crank front end better...

So since I'm not planning to go anywhere near 200hp, I should have nothing to worry about. Good to know.  :)
